Mecum...
« on: August 29, 2020, 07:22:46 AM »
My brother and I are about to head out to the Mecum Auto Auction "Summer Special" in Kissimmee. They normally do a 11 or 12 day auction in January, but this one is only three days long. I guess they're "testing the waters" to see if they can safely hold a large event like this. This event will have over 1,000 vehicles. The January auction routinely has over three to four thousand.

Here's the lot list for today, the final day of the auction: https://www.mecum.com/auctions/summer-special-2020/lots/collector-cars/08/29/

I get a media pass for this event so, hopefully, I'll get some photos worthy of posting!

Sounds like fun. We have watched portions of their auctions on TV and just love seeing the cars that are on there. Would love to see a few pictures, after you get back. We have visited a few car museums in our RV travels.

I have a bunch still to process, but here are some teasers:

2018 Ford GT - This car sold for $935,000:

2004 Saleen S7 - The high bid of $750,000 wasn't enough to give this car a new home:

This 1974 BMW 2002 Tii sold for just under $10,000, and it was in darn near mint condition:

That BMW 2002 might have been the one to buy!  At least in the sense that the GT and S7 are well above my pay grade...! :o

No, I didn't. I just went down there for one day.

During the January auction, which is 10 or 11 days long, we'll go down with the intent of buying. This time around it was a short, three day "summer special" to see if they could hold the event safely. From all appearances they can, so that bodes well for me (but poorly for my checking account) in January!

It was really in phenomenal condition. The day before a low mileage Mini Cooper sold for $3,300. They're not all collector cars and, what I refer to as, "Nirvana rides".

If I had been down there on Thursday, I'd have been tempted by this:

I've got a modern John Cooper Works MINI Clubman and it's a hoot to drive; I wouldn't mind having a classic Mini as well.  Another obscure classic car I've always wanted is a VW Karmann Ghia.  Neither is the fastest thing on four wheels, but both have got panache in a left-handed sort of way...  Kind-of like me, I guess... ;)

Here are some more shots from the Mecum auction. I can't wait for January!

2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition - sold for $412,500:

1969 Dodge Daytona - sold for $198,000

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series (a friend of mine was behind the wheel of this one) - Did not sell at a high bid of $400,000:

1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible - High bid was $130,000, but it didn't sell:

1934 Chrysler Airflow - sold for $30,800:

1992 Aston Martin Virage - this somewhat rare one owner car, with only 5,700 original miles, failed to sell at a high bid of $75,000:

1972 Ford Maverick - Original showroom condition, 302ci V-8. One owner, 33,00 miles. Bidding went to $11,500, but it didn't sell:

1989 Land Rover Defender 90 - My show favorite. Bidding went only to $20,000, but it didn't sell. I'd have gone to $30,000:

2019 Porsche Turbo S Exclusive Series Convertible - Bidding went to a quarter of a million dollars, but that amount fell short:

1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible - This car didn't sell at the high bid of $135,000:

1969 Pontiac Grand Prix - My Dad had one of these back in the 70's in British Racing Green. This one sold for $10,450:

This is the view as you pass from the staging area onto the auction floor:

Between Mecum and Barrett-Jackson, I prefer Mecum. I cover these events on assignment, and even though Barrett-Jackson has a great media room, fully stocked with food, drink, wi-fi and air conditioning, the access they afford media types like me completely sucks. Mecum doesn't have a designated media area, but I can literally go anywhere I want, hence the photos from the auction floor.

Anyway, I'm registering as a bidder for the January auction, so we'll have to see what happens!

Very nice!

One of my regrets is not going into debt by buying every 2005-06 Ford GT I could get my hands on back when they were new -- even buying them at the premiums the dealers wanted for them.  Now they're selling for 2-3 times those prices...! :-\

Thanks for the great photos, and sneak peak at the auction.  Absolutely loved some of those cars.  One the cars that really caught my eye was the 1934 Chrysler Airflow, what a beauty.
