Yeah, as I recall "cigarfan" had a Hatcher made with wood from
"The Tree" -- Mahogany's analog to Brazilian Rosewood's "Milagro." Very desirable.
Mr. Hatcher looks to be more than a luthier; he's an artist with his craft. Like you said, his guitars have aesthetics like no other's. I'd love to play one of his guitars for myself to see if the tone matches the appearance. But so far I've not come across one; perhaps it's just as well, as I'd probably want one...
I understand that he's got a long waiting list for commissioned guitars; but he occasionally has guitars for sale on
his web site. Unfortunately for me, most of his model line seems geared toward fingerstyle players, which doesn't really suit a strummer like myself. Although he's currently got a "Bear Claw" Sitka/Quilted Maple "Josie" (his small Jumbo model) for sale on his site... That might fit the bill... Hmm...
