NGD 2013 518e
« on: September 10, 2016, 11:45:58 AM »
Not the best pictures I woke up a little late and there was too much light so reflections were a challenge, but they are passable.

The guitar arrived in great shape sight unseen.  Slightly dry, but otherwise in mint condition.  It was strung with light strings which would explain why the previous owner possibly was not satisfied with it.  With the lights on it tone was still very good compared to a GA, but not impressive based on its larger size.

My first impression was how small it feels in the hands.   It does not feel like a jumbo or a large guitar from a handling standpoint IMHO and I am only 5'10".   It feels like a more comfortable dread.  With the light strings it sounded very much like a GA size hog with a little more oomph, but not much.   I removed the strings, polished it, and replaced with the appropriate medium strings.  That was when things got interesting.  It is a cannon.  The loudest and most balanced guitar I have laid my hands on.  I have owned about 15 guitars nearly all on the higher end of the scale from both factory and boutique builders and this thing is just remarkable.  It is balanced string to string, but sounds like it is plugged into an amp.  Bass is deep, trebles sparkle.   Strummed it seems to handle anything and it sounds like more than one instrument is in the mix.  Fingerstyle is sounds amplified when it is not.  Very responsive and loud.   I have a feeling that this guitar is a single players dream, but probably would not work as well in a mix because it fills so much sonic space.

I spoke with someone about it being no longer available in the Taylor lineup and they told me that they had gotten a notice about Mahogany that supply is becoming constrained.  That may explain why the GO is now only available in Rosewood, Maple, and Ovangkol outside of the BTO program.

Here are the pics.  The top is very nicely bear clawed, and it was apparently left in the light for quite a while as the spruce top appears that it is far older than 3 years.  The Mahogany in unique in figure, with a very nice flamed look.  I would not consider it technically flamed, but the pattern is gorgeous and not the typical plain appearance that you usually see.

I bet with the mediums that has impressive voice. It looks fabulous! Enjoy your new Taylor!

Did you ever mention what year it is? It has the same appointments as my 2013. Classy!

They only made this model for a very brief amount of time in 2013, and switched to the current ivoroid appointment offered on the 5 series latter later in 2013.

That's a beautiful guitar - I'll bet it is a cannon- interesting that the larger surface presents a challenge with the mahogany restriction. I suppose that a 3-piece back would help, but in any case, congrats on acquiring one of the last regular production models. Enjoy!
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

The GO in Mahogany might have been a market challenge as well.  I imagine it might be tough to step up on deciding between a 5,6,8,or 9 series.  The 5 costs a lot less new than the others.  I forget the marketing term for when one product in a lineup cannibalizes sales.

Congratulations! Beautiful! I'm looking at a dreadnaught for my next acoustic.

Real purty 518!  Can't recall seeing a nicer Mahogany wood set on a standard-series model!

Yeah, I'm sure the guitar was lacking with the light-gauge strings; but the GO's really are cannons when they're set up correctly.  Enjoy!

Yeah this guitar really has me second guessing.  I usually keep a BTO or ltd in the collection but this one may change my mind.

It goes tomorrow for the Colosi treatment.  The only thing this guitar needed besides a good clean and polish.

I will post some final pics.

Thanks,  it is a fine instrument.  I will know more about it after the setup and Colosi bone treatment.

Got her back from being boned and setup.  It is a rib rattler.  Surprised Taylor dropped this combo, even string to string, but crazy deep bass and mids with nice Taylor sparkle.

Took it by my favorite bmm mom and pop and it is deeper than d18and d28 but far more balanced.

To rainy to grap pics, will post with pins, nut, and saddle soon.
