New 526 coming
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:07:53 PM »
I have a new Taylor 526 coming. Bought this on a leap of faith from watching any video I could find and there were not many. It seems like the acoustic I've always been looking for. Big bass sound great for strumming and flat picking. Of course been wrong before but I do like mahogany dreads and a GS seems perfect. Do you guys know if it comes with 80/20's or phosphor bronze ? Do most of you Taylor players stay with Elixirs or like another brand on your Taylor. I mainly have used Martin stings SP's or Lifespans...

depending on the production date, i would think that the steel string guitars started after
this year's winter NAMM & slightly before, should  have elixir PB nanowebs on them -
EXP19s are my "go-to" strings & the last set of elixirs i bought had a guitar attached ;)
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Congrats on your new HOG Taylor! I have to agree with you on your impression that solid Mahogany boxes would have big bass. But I too have been wrong! There is a well recorded review on the 526e at the Acoustic Letter web site in case you haven't seen it: http://youtu.be/hxHDyFEdFM8

I think michaelw is correct about the production dates / strings. For me, I've stuck with the Elixirs on my Taylors. Haven't had any issues with them.
They sound good to me and seem to last longer than non-coated strings. The Nanoweb 80/20 bronze are the ones I've been using with the exception of the 812ce 12 fret I just got...that has the new HD phosphor bronze lights. I've only had this guitar for a few days but so far these strings seem fine. They are a tad stiffer than regular lights being that the 1-2-3 strings are 13-17-25 as opposed to lights 12-16-24. They seem well balanced on the 12 fret. Not sure how they will work on pre-2014 Taylors. Good luck with the 526...post some pics n clips when you can. That one is on my lust list!  :)

i usually try a bunch of strings on a new guitar and invariably, end up with D'addario EXP's.
on the 'hog 324 i just got... i might just keep me the Elixirs ! the guitars sounds is perfect already !
congrats on your new 526 ! i was once the fence for the longest time on the 324 vs 526. the simple deciding factor was that i already have a slew of GS'.
i would love to find someone with a 526 so i can swap for a few days to see what they sound/feel like.

Congrats on your new 526.  I played one in the store a while back and it had a very solid and punchy bass.  I would have considered taking it home, but the GS shape is just too big for me to play comfortably.  :-(

Congrats on your new 526. Taylor has really hit a home run IMO with their hogtoppers. My 524 is simply sublime....

Congratulations on your 526.  As for strings, I prefer John Pearse.  PB's on most, 80/20's on one in particular.
