I think that most of us players here on UTGF are pickers rather that finger stylist, but I am curious to get a polling answer to this. Which style are you using nowadays?
-
I'm 99% fingerstyle. I love playing the melody of songs, since I'm not a singer. I learned to read music from day one, so that has really paid off for me. Also play by ear. I only strum when I HAVE to. ;) When I have to accompany, I'd rather play flat-pick style, with my fingerpicks. It's what I'm used to. Been playing fingerstyle for probably 39 of my 41 years.
-
My name is Strumming Fool. I have been a strumming fool since my teens. A few times in earlier days, I was a fingerstyle clutz!
-
I play 99% Fingerstyle too. When I strum a song, it's with my nails. I play lead with nail or with a pick with about equal ability so nearly always I just use my nail.
-
I rely on the pick. My fingerstyle skills are lacking, but I'm willing to learn. :)

When I'm writing, the song tells me if it should be fingerstyle or strummed. Then after it's done, I play it the opposite, so I can play all of them either way. So for me it's 50/50. And after penning 300+ songs, I'd say I can comfortably do both.
-
Sort of hybrid fingerstyle. Lots of string plucking with 3+fingers plus the usual fingerstyle stuff. At home 99.99% fingerstyle; when in front of people (I hesitate to call it "performing"), probably 70% fingerstyle, 30% picked.
-
I use them both. For long it seemed to me more "respectable" to fingerpick, but I got away from the trained people ways of thinking...Various techniques allow various results, and though there are things that will sound better one way or an other, many things can be done either way...Altogether, I like both approaches.

I probably fingerpick 75% of the time, and strum with a flat pick the rest. it depends on the situation. When I am solo, I have an extensive repertoire of finger style instrumentals (Piedmont, ragtime, slack-key) plus I accompany my voice with fingerstyle patterns and embellishments. When strumming (as in bluegrass or other jams) I mostly play rhythm, or Carter style rhythm and bass, aka "boom-chuck" with connecting runs. On my "to learn" list is lead / melodic playing and soloing with a flatpick, but so far that has come quite slowly.

Interesting that the "only fingerstyle" line is the longest. I would have guessed the opposite results.
I don't think I own a single pick.

What are these "Taropatch F & G" tunings ? Anything different or similar to usual G open-tuning ?
-
Bernie, taro patch is open G tuning (DGDGBD). Taro patch F is the same tuning down one whole step.

Thanks Earl, got it...
