nylons on other series
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:49:23 PM »
when reading the news recently I see that some other series are available with nylon strings. I am just curious about the Why this is being offered? are the Ns series not selling? having two other taylors ( GC& & DN8) how would one of these fit into my needs? my wants are easy to understand but my needs are harder, so far LOL

Less confusion and more visibility would be my guess.  With the NS it was always confusing as to the wood combos, body shapes etc.  If they are part of the main line with a designation you should know the combo.  I don't think it will necessarily help sell a ton of new guitars but it will make it easier to get people to look at them ("hey, never knew they had a nylon string 900 series").

I hope it allows more shops to actually carry them.  I've only seen two in the past years, and they were the NS24's.  I would love to play a 7,8,9 series nylon.

the NS designations have been used for 9 years, beginning with
the original grand auditorium  non-cutaway body 12 fret in 02 -
the removal of the middle check digit (1 for 6 string & 5 for 12 string)
was the main difference in designation (no 12 string nylons as of yet) &
i felt there would have been little difficulty in differentiating between
models (wood combinations & body shapes) by the designation  alone

the appointments have been quite consistent, with a blank fretboard &
wood marquetry rosette, save for the NS6 LTD L1/L2s in 03 & NS-DDSM &
perhaps by changing the aesthetics & the model designations to be 'in-line'
with the steel strings series, it would allow for easier identification, not just
by the model name, but by the guitar's appearance, as the appointments
are consistent with the steel string series (rosette, fretmarkers, binding)

also, the cutaway on the 12 fret GC nylons have a bit 'softer' overall profile
than the more tightly curved cutaway used on the 14 fret GC steel strings

i believe that since the NS is a 'hybrid' guitar, with a radiused fretboard &
a narrower nut than on traditional classical models, that by changing the
aesthetics perhaps these models might appeal to more of the steel string
players, so that one would consider adding the nylon tone to their 'arsenal'

with the potential for a more traditional nylon classical in the not-so-distant future,
perhaps the change in aesthetics is also to help prevent possible confusion later on ???

as the 7s show englemann spruce & the 8/9s both have sitka,
i think an edgeburst cedar top 914ce-N would be quite nice also :D

I think its a good idea, you have more wood options now but I wish they would have kept the NS rosette. I prefer the look of it over the standard rosette's.
