What song are you working on now?
« on: January 20, 2012, 08:22:57 PM »
What song are you currently learning and practicing? How long have you been working on it and how are you progressing? Are you struggling with it?

I'm working on 'Till There Was you" by Meredit Wilson, as performed by The Beatles. I've been working on it for a few days and am finally starting to get the hang of the more tricky elements. I am far from mastering it, but I feel like I am well on the way. Eventually I'll be using my looper to really nail it. For me it's pretty challenging.

I keep procratinating on my own song, but I want to use some of the techniques I'm learning for writing it.

I have been working on Rylynn by Andy McKee for a month and a half   I have been struggling with some of the timing but I made ahold amount of progress today actually. So I am hopeful. The tune is so technically above my level many little things are a challenge and a demand individual practice on my part.

I was working on Angelina by Tommy Emmanuel. I kind of go back and forth between the two. But it is the same story   Way above my technical level.

It's more like I am working on a group of things.  I've been playing some Black Crowes "Remedy", "She Talks to Angels", some Led Zep - "Hey, Hey What Can I do" The Band "The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek" (played all in standard tuning as I don't switch to the recorded tuning key of these songs) then for a break some Maybelle Carter "Wildwood Flower" and others.  I really like the Carter style.

I would like to some day learn the solo to "My Sharona"  I have it about 1/3 done but nowhere near the speed needed for it to actually sound like the song.

I've also been working on a few things besides 'Till There Was You." The other night I mastered "Angie" (Rolling Stones), which I've been playing for a long time, but listened a little more closely and figured out a better, more accurate way to play it. I'm constantly practicing "Never Going Back Again" (Fleetwod Mac) and most of the intro down, but I still have a long way to go. It's very challenging. I am also working on "I'm Your Captain" (Grand Funk) and "Give Me Love" (George Harrison). I have both down pretty good, it's just a matter of practing to get them more smooth. Been fooling around with "Crossroads" (Eric Clapton) a bit too. With all that, however, right now my main focus is "Till There Was You."

Guitar class wise, we have just been given 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' by Dylan. This is a bit of a struggle as I'm still not very good at barre chords; Bb is a bit of a nightmare. Another struggle I'm having with this, is that the only version I'd heard had been by a UK band called UB40 with Robert Palmer; a really great version with a reggae beat that really sticks in your head, but not what the class tutor wants.

On my own, I'm working on 'Hallelujah'; found a nice version on YouTube that I'm trying to get my fingers around.

And finally, I'm trying to work out how Springsteen plays his 'My Father's House'. I've got the sheet music and chords, but I'm struggling to work out the picking pattern.

So all in all plenty to keep me going for a while :)

.......I'm still not very good at barre chords......

One thing that is really helping me with barre chords is that I have been practicing the CAGED system up the neck.  Getting those chords down and then playing at a decent tempo has been a challenge.  I practice the C, F, and G chords at the 3, 5, 7, 8,and 10 frets.

Cheers, I wasn't familiar with the CAGED system, but have started reading-up on it and will give it a try.

Trying to form the the chords and do it cleanly is indeed a challenge and I've got quite a way to go; but things are bettter than they were a year ago  :)

Try playing Help! by The Beatles. Not a difficult song to play and that neat little decending George Harrison arpeggio riff that repeats several time is fun and a little tricky.
