What ES system does a 2007 314ce have
« on: March 04, 2018, 11:52:42 PM »
A friend of mine has that guitar and says the ES has been nothing but trouble.  It actually quit on him altogether this past weekend.

I have ES1.1 in my 2004, but I think ES1.2 may have been out then? Someone will have the dates on that. ES1.3 gets a lot of love around here, FWIW. ES1.3 should be an easy upgrade if he desires it.

That's ES1.2, 2007-2010.

This ES iteration replaced the AA version with the 9v and revoiced the preamp.  If the owner is the orig owner and it's gone bad, Taylor will replace it with v.1.3 (if they still have them in stock), and it is a worthwhile improvement, IMHO.  If not the original owner, you can have any authorized-Taylor tech replace it with the 1.3 for roughly the same cost as having the one of the good LR Baggs or Fishman pickups installed.  The benefit is all the features of the 3 controls and battery box are still usable, and of course, the 1.3 sounds great live, IMHO.  Your ears, your cash, your call :)

I had a 2006 414ce, bought new in 2007.  Taylor refused to allow certified Taylor tech to replace the ES system. I had to send it to Taylor & they upgraded to the 9 volt system. The reason I started this process was an issue, for the second time, with the battery box connections. (UPS broke the top upon return shipping to me & thus had to reship  to Taylor for a new top—at UPS cost.—But while I waited, I bought a GS mini.  :)

There were a few problems with the ES1.1 (2003-2006), as not only were the soundboard sensors going bad (not rare, from what I heard), but folks complained of rattling AA batts, and wrapping them with a post-it-note was not uncommon.  And yes, I had an 04 ES go bad, but I simply had it repaired (by an auth. tech) with the same ES as it was long ago before they had the newer versions.

Upgrading from the AA to the 9v system requires some wood work on the end block, which is why I suspect Taylor wont allow a tech to upgrade it and they prefer to do the work.  But the upgrade from the 1.2 (2007-2009) to 1.3 is an easy operation for a tech, not to mention I had it done to two guitars by my tech.  Just offering a data point to consider :)

That's all interesting about the non-Taylor techs......because in my case, Taylor recommended my friend go to a more local guy rather than send it to SD for the upgrade.  Of course, that local guy is a guy who worked for Taylor for a number of years....I guess that may be the difference.

I purchased a used 2007 310CE this year. The seller showed me a receipt where the two-way shipping cost to and from Taylor was more than the ES1 9V upgrade itself. He still felt it was money well spent and I agree 100%. My first Taylor and I love it. I own several other less expensive acoustic electrics that are basically collecting dust on the wall now. But my Taylor does have a little competition- my 1970 Gretsch Nashville and Fender Vibrolux Reverb amp. Too much ole time rock-n-roll still left in me to give it up. So have to divide my time now between Chuck Berry and James Taylor.
