NGD Taylor Wildwood 414ce Maple
« on: February 26, 2018, 04:34:36 PM »
So I am getting this guitar delivered tomorrow.  Its the Taylor Wildwood 414ce Maple. It has an Engelmann Spruce top with Figured Maple back and sides.  I am debating if I should add a pick guard or not.  Here are the high res photos from Wildwood's site.

That is simply gorgeous. I wouldn’t add a pick guard personally, but that’s based solely on how I think it looks right now. What kind of guard were you thinking?

Was thinking black.  But I think I am leaning to not putting one on.

That's a beauty!!!! Try a static cling clear pick guard, until you decide. Its a minimal investment. I use one on my K26. They show up when they are on - they are not invisible , but at least you are not hiding that beautiful top permanently. I strum so I have to have one. If you are finger style player, you can do without.

PS : I love Wildwood Guitars, Half  of my guitars are from there . They are super great to deal with. You will be surprised how fast it gets to you.

GC has it right.  Try the invisible(but not really)static pickguard, it is inexpensive, and if you don't like it just peel it off and go a different route.

Sweet looking guitar! If you strum and sometimes hit the top, get a pickguard(maybe the static one), but if you are all fingerstyle or have learned to strum without scraping the top keep that beautiful wood visible!
Enjoy either way.

I had to take a sneak peek.

Also, some interesting observations.

1st.  The inside label says Custom Model and Custom GA as the model.
2nd. The case has an additional clasp on the back side.

Wildwood labeled this as a 414ce.  However, it does not say 414ce in the model.  This confuses me because my other Taylor which is also a 414ce has a label that says Special Edition and Custom 414ce as the model.

Here are some pictures taken by me.  Thankfully we are having an exceptionally warm day here and the guitar was not frozen when I received it.

OK, I played this guitar tonight.  It was love at first strum.  I like its tone much better than the Engelmann/EIR but maybe its old strings. The Engelmann/Maple has a smoother tone to my ears.  I just like it.   Going to replace the strings on Rosewood one this weekend and see how it changes.   Don't get me wrong.  The both sound great in their own ways.  However, I kinda like the Maple just a bit more I think.  Time will tell.

Also they included was a clear pick guard.   Not the removable type.  So I need to really decide if I want to install that.

I also edited the above post with the pictures to include the back side of the guitar.

Wildwood does have different labels for their special run guitars.  Mine a 514ce-CV WW.
So, it has an Adirondack top with Adirondack CV bracing, so the label had 514ce-CV WW with a series two digit number plus a serial number.    Also, the label had Custom Shop on it as well, plus Wildwood Guitars name on the label. hopefully, you can see it in the picture.
