Mahogany T5z- getting a bit of a glow after 10 months
« on: February 22, 2018, 10:23:58 PM »
I brought home a beautiful dark T5z Classic from a road show back in April, and it's pretty much been my Number One  six string ever since.  But I have a conundrum - one that I should have seen coming, I guess.  It's happened to me before on my beloved Takamine(s)

The satin finish is starting to polish up.  It's particularly noticable below the strings where a pick guard might sit on most other guitars.

Ironically, when I was buying it, the dealer suggested I might want to have a clear mylar pickguard applied to it (no glue- some sort of static attraction, apparently). I said no, because it would create a "shiny spot" on the otherwise pristine satin finish.

Silly me.  I have a "shiny spot" regardless.   The finish is also getting shiny on the edges (no biggie) and of course, on the back, where no one will ever really see it.

Thirty years ago, I had the same issue on my jumbo Takamines, likewise with a satin finish that over a very brief period of time turned into a shiny gloss.  Back then, I was pretty much told to live with it, and I have.

But thirty years on, has there been any progress? Is there hope?

Or should I simply start calling it one of the new DLX's??  ::)

Well even if you would have put on the static pickguard it would have gotten shiny around the edges of the guard, right? so probably no real gain with the guard.
With complete sarcasm, I will say

Well... yeah. I suppose so, but after only a few months? I had hopes it would last a couple of years, at least.

It's  Sunday night.. Perhaps I'll call Taylor in the morning and see what their best suggestion would be.

Sigh...   :-\

Hi KM!

IMHO, I'd love marks like that!  I have a 2016 324, that has a hog top and is also satin.  I know it's going to happen at some point but like others, it's mark of a well loved guitar.   ;D

Cheers!
