Any with a 714CE-N?
« on: June 28, 2016, 04:55:17 PM »
I just ordered my 714CE-N and I have not found a lot of reviews. I bought a very used NS74 a couple of months ago and I am now hooked!
Anyone else enjoying their Nylon String Taylor? I seriously considered the Jason Mraz model but wanted a bigger body that the GC.

Congrats on the new guitar! I purchased an NS54 during the first year that Taylor started making them. I loved it and thought it played and sounded wonderfully.......so wonderfully that I wrote a glowing review on Harmony Central......about 13 years ago.  I actually preferred the tone to my 514 at the time. The only negative thing that I could say about the nylon series is that they are very soft sounding and quiet. When played next to a locally built nylon string guitar, the Taylor neck felt more manageable as it was meant for steel string players who wanted to dabble with nylon strings, but regarding volume and true depth and breadth of voice the Still River nylon had it severely out matched.  I eventually sold it to my friend as he was just suited to it so much more than me. See, I just don't hear nylon strings in my head when I think of my ideal tone. They sound great when I hear other people play them though.

I picked up a (like new) used 514CE-N about 6 weeks ago. Beautiful in looks and sound. I am surprised at the deep bottom end. Also shocked at how little it weighs (2014 model). Still adjusting to the wider neck. If I can get used to the neck it definitely is a keeper. Did your 714CE-N arrive?

Any other folks on here play nylon string Taylors?

As mentioned in another thread, I recently purchased a used/mint Taylor 2012 Fall Limited Edition GAce-n-fltd, and it came with the original brown Taylor case.  I was very surprised that Taylor made nylon string guitars, and even more surprised at the fine quality and incredible play-ability of the instrument.  It has become my main instrument.  I am really happy that Taylor did not stick a pick guard on it, since I would think these are meant for fingerstyle.

My 714 arrived! I love it..Trying to figure out how to post photos tonight. I did compare it A/B with my cedar NS74 that I bought off of Reverb. Very similar sound, tone etc..
It surprised me as the Lutz was expected to be much brighter than the Cedar

Taylor 2012 Fall Limited Edition GAce-n-fltd

I too own a Taylor 2012 Fall Limited Edition GAce-n-fltd. Only mine came with a standard black case. That part was truly disappointing as I expected the fancy brown case that I got with my Limited GS. Other than that, I love my nylon. The one thing I don't like is the G string plays real sharp. Nylon players say that's pretty normal, and that the solution is to find the right G string, preferably with lighter tension, that will help her play in tune. Right now, I just tune that string a bit flat and live with it. And no, I'm not pressing too hard, nor am I unknowingly moving the string sideways a bit.

I hope no one minds the bounce to this older thread. I just picked one of these up. I love it! I use it to play jazz and it is so easy to play fits me like a glove. I am a bit confused about the differences between the 814 and the 714. Mine is a 2016 and has a Sitka spruce top and it looks like the binding on the 814 rather than koa. But those minor differences aside, what's the difference? Doesn't matter... just curious. Thanks.

I'm enjoying my nylon 412ce/nr which I have now had for almost a year  :)

I notice that Taylor seem to have switch the factory default strings to the D'Addario Pro-Arte Hard Tension Carbon strings for their newer guitars.  What is the rationale for this / benefit?

714 with white binding is ivoroid binding prior to the 2016 redesign, new design is koa binding

814 white binding following 2014 redesign is now figured maple (looks like ivoroid or plastic from a distance, but looks much better up close)

My experience with the 814 and 714 before the redesigns (2014 and 2016 respectively) was that the 814 series had more refined appointments, and cedar was an option for the 714 top (still is).  I can't recall if the bracing patterns were different.

Good to know. Thanks. I know mine was made in the beginning of 2016 and has a Sitka spruce top-- not lutz. According to Taylor it was a standard build, so it must have been in between the shift, I guess. Regardless... its a fun guitar. Thanks for the info.
