Pickguard removal
« on: August 12, 2017, 01:53:40 AM »
Recently removed the pickguard from my revoiced 814ce. There is a slight tan line but I am very happy with the way it turned out. The rosewood pickguard is still in 1 piece so I can reattach it in the future if I choose to.

Looks neat. I've often wondered why guitars are not delivered without an installed pickguard, but rather with it in a safe plastic bag together with the right adhesive, so buyers can decide if and when they want to put it on themselves. It's not rocket science.

Agreed. That would've saved me a lot of headache. Perhaps Taylor doesn't like people messing with the guitars just in case they misapply or even damage the guitar in the process. I believe that is why they don't include the truss rod wrench with the guitars.

Nice job. I think with that light of a tan line, you'll see it fade as the top darkens.

Songman, I see your point, but I've seen several installations of Taylor PG's by customers and they look hideous (misaligned, cocked, etc.). My guess is that Taylor would prefer to put them on correctly. It's a reflection on Taylor when these are out there, put on by someone who can't handle even the simplest of tasks. I have installed one, and I took my time.....turned out fine. I think the fact that they can be easily removed and any guitar can be ordered w/o a PG works for most people.

Yep,

I see your points, it would not look well if too many guitars had misaligned or badly installed pickguards.

Cheers, Bob.

I removed the pickguard from a brand new hog top GS Mini a few weeks back and I was stunned to find how much of a tan line it had.

On closer inspection, I could see lighter wood in "the shadow" of the bridge, so I guess it got its tan just hanging under the lights in the humidor room at the local GC.

I must admit, the tortoise shell guard looked good on the mahogany top, but I'm a fingerpicker and thought I'd take it off since it was a brand new guitar and likely did not have a tan already....
Anyway - I doubt it will even out so I'll likely get a replacement pickguard from Taylor and re-install it.

Check the serial number to see when the guitar was made. You may have bought it a few weeks ago but it may have been a 2016 model.

How did you find removing it? I've removed plastic pickguards before, which you can slightly bend as you peel them off, but not wooden ones.

Very slowly with floss, blow dryer and a credit card. It took me about 30 minutes. I used naphtha to remove the sticky glue left behind.
