Academy Series Guitars
« on: June 30, 2017, 10:15:23 AM »
While at GC the other day I picked up and played one of these, and I must say, it felt very good in my hands!  While it did not have the tone of my 814, it was an incredible guitar.  Right down to the bevel on it.

I can't imagine if I had started on something this good  :)

I gotta try one of these Academy Series guitars. They sure are a nice concept for the person who is starting out or even for folks who just want a handy couch guitar. I haven't tried the arm radius yet. It will be interesting to feel the difference between that and the arm bevel on my 914. I know the arm bevel is really nice!

Got me one last month when GC finally had the A12 in stock even tho they had the A10 and tried that out. Easy to play, much easier than the Martin 000 series. I wanted the grand concert version for the smaller body. Originally I wasn't too fond of the arm rest but after awhile you kinda get used to it. I'm just debating on whether to add a pickguard to it. I have it already but just not sure as of right now.

I'm a big fan of concert sized Taylors. Love my Academy 12. Could be a GS Mini killer. I've had 2 of those come and go. Great sub $XXX guitar. It has that Taylor feel.

would love to hear your impressions on the A12. I've been looking for one to play - but no one in my area has one.

i considered a gs mini  - so I could have one just "out" all the time...it def killed that desire for me - maybe an a12 one day for me!

I'm a little surprised that Taylor didn't kick off this series with a Grand Auditorium model....

They already had a low cost GA in the 114. They did not have a low cost GC. Plus, GC is more beginner-friendly.

sort of..
the wood and steel that features the academy talks about how andy started with the dreadnaught shape bc it's the classic shape and then added the two grand concert models to reach a broad range of players

what jrporter and i are implicitly say is is that we are surprised there is no academy GA model bc that is taylors most popular shape

there's also a 110 model which a angry level dreadnaught...

If these sell well, don't be surprised if they come out with all sorts of wood models to choose from. Mahog, Maple, Rosewood, etc....  ;D

Not too sure about that. I would think that it would behoove Taylor to keep the entry level into the line as reasonably priced as possible, and that means keeping the frills and extras to a minimum...

First off, my apologies. I'm new and didn't catch the price $ mentioning restrictions.
In reply to Zeebow, this is definitely my "out" guitar. As to sound, I did a blind test with my wife. She liked the sound of all the GCs. They're just different. The Academy sustain was 2nd to the old 712.

I think it was a good decision for Taylor to tap this "beginner" market.

When I was looking for a new guitar this past Spring I tried the new Academy series but the sound was not quite what I wanted.  The 110e (prototype w/ mahogany top) was what I chose. It had a richer sound and was still as easy to play.
Though I really liked the bevel on the Academy series.
