My only question is how serious were they ?

1.  a little bit
2.  half-way
3.  covering up and backtracking from dead serious
4.  who knows?

At least they enjoyed themselves.

And about the grease. I think Paul was referring to the seals' predecessors, the frogmen. Saw that movie when I was a kid too.

I seem to remember that long ago swimmers taking the plunge in the English Channel would slather themselves up with grease.
