String Questions
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:00:27 PM »
2011 brought me 2 Taylors, 814ce and GS Mini.

I am so very happy with the way they sound and play that I almost don't want to change a thing.  I may be willing to do some experimentation down the road, but I want to make sure I have the proper base-line.

Here's what I know and what I don't.

814ce, What I know

shipped with Elixir, 80/20 Bronze, Light / .012-.053.

What I don't.

Polyweb/Nanoweb?  What did it ship with, what's the difference?
The set that GC sold me was #11050, Polyweb "With Anti-Rust plain Steels".  Is that what it shipped with?

GS Mini, What I know

Elixir Medium.  That's all I know.

Polyweb/Nanoweb?  Any other variations?

Thanks in advance.

Follow Up.

I called Taylor.  All the strings they use are the Elixir 80/20 NanoWeb.  Light for the 814, Medium for the Mini.

This is what Elixir says regarding Poly vs. Nano web

Ultra-thin NANOWEB® Coating...
Has the bright tone and punch of non-coated strings
Feels like traditional strings

Original POLYWEB® Coating...
Has a balanced tone and smooth response
Feels comfortably smooth and reduces finger squeak

Taylors are shipped with Nanoweb strings. I've used both the Polyweb and the Nanoweb strings. There is a definitely difference in feel, look, and tone. I'll describe those differences, but it doesn't mean the strings are actually made this way:

The Polyweb strings seem like they are first wound before being coated. It's as if a nylon stocking were slipped over the entire string. Like I said, I don't know if they are coated this way, but when they've been on my guitars for a while, the coating first starts to pill then it starts to lift off the strings. To me these sound a little more muted than the Nanowebs.

The Nanoweb strings seem like they are coated first then wound. I can feel the individual grooves of the wound strings much more than the Polywebs.

I haven't had the Phosphor Bronze strings long enough to see how they wear. They do feel stiffer and are warmer than the Nanowebs.

Here is a visual graph from Elixir's web page that shows the Polyweb strings are the warmest sounding, the Phosphor Bronze are in the middle, and the Nanoweb strings are the brightest (please note Elixir didn't list them from warmest to brightest though).

And here's Bob saying why he uses Elixir strings...video comes from Elixir's web site:

On my 814ce, I prefer the Nanoweb, light, PB Elixer's ... I've tried other strings but always come back to these ... I currently use the same on my 414ce Ltd (although, the 80/20's bring out some good characteristics on it and I may go back at some point) ... I genereally like the extra warmth of the PB's ... if your guitar is already warm, as with a Cedar top, or you like the brighter Taylor tone, you might like to stick with the 80/20's ... PB's are worth a try IMO ... as with any coated string, don't make a final judgement until you've played in the strings for several hours ...

Cindy:  Both types are coated the same way, after the windings are put on.   It's just that the "nylon stocking" on the nanowebs is much thinner; "nano" referring to smaller.   You feel the grooves between the windings on the nanos because the coating is so much thinner.

Here's the Elixir page, under each image they show a scale as to how warm or bright the strings are. Two of my friends prefer the Polyweb, I'm going to try the Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze next. I'm looking for a little more sound when fingerpicking but I'm quite pleased with the overall balance when using a pick while playing with the Nanoweb 80/20.  http://www.elixirstrings.com/products/product_acoustic.html

Ahh...thanks for the explanation! Good to know! 8)
