No offense to anyone, but I'm glad I got my 714ce natural finish cedar top when I did. It's a great guitar, and great looking. As pretty as sunburst is, I've never understood why anyone would cover up a beautiful natural wood finish.

To each his own, I guess.  That's the beauty of guitars.  I say the same thing about people who use steak sauce, instead of enjoying the true flavor of the steak, but that's just me.  I see where you're coming from, but I love a good burst, and Taylor has been really good at them over the past few years.

If in fact the image on the FB page is of the new 700 series (and I have no reason to believe it is not), I am NOT a fan. 2 things ruin it for me: 1) WHITE binding... dude, the 700 was MEANT for dark/rosewood binding all the way, and that is one of the best things that has always made it stand out from other models, and 2) 200/300/400 series rosette... double dude, what a waste of space on an otherwise beautiful guitar. And this coming from a guy who OWNS a 615ce with white binding (which I love on my 615), and who OWNS a 315ce with a plain rosette (and I think it's perfect for my utilitarian 315)... but NOT on a 7xx.

It has been said before, by several other UTGF'ers, but I +1 all the comments about the white/light binding and the plain rosette being BAD choices for a series that has always been among the best looking Taylors; a perfect compromise of simplicity and bling. Now, it appears to be just a plain ole' compromise.  :(

The new 700s appear to have matching maple binding and rosette. I do like the fretboard inlay pattern. However, I too will miss that rosewood binding with pinstripe. Maybe they changed the binding because they went back to rosewood binding on the 900s, but then again, the 800 series already features maple binding as well. In any case, my plans for buying a 714 as my next guitar may have changed. I might have to go the BTO route. I'll wait and see what other changes Taylor has in store for 2012, before making a final judgment.

perhaps the style was inspired a bit by the original 700s ???
first year production 710 (3 ring rosette, black binding, large MOP fretmarkers)

I love the look of a cedar top, I'm hoping they are offering an either or choice as to whether you get the sunburst or not. There are beautiful sunburst guitars but I don't think I want to own one, it still feels like a paint job covering up what was already beautiful and natural.

It would be nice if they'd offer a cedar top with the edgeburst which would make it look less like an 8xx-9xx guitar.

I agree.  I love cedar tops, and I don't think I would want a burst to cover it up.

I like these. I like these a lot.

I like the new inlay; very classy.

This is my first post on this forum after leaving AGF. I'm a 700 series guy. I love the combo of cedar/rosewood. I know other companies have made them, and from old posts I know that Taylor has made at least one 12 string cedar/rosewood guitar. Maybe that's what we are going to see. I'm sure it's just wishful thinking, but this would make my day. 714 series with maple binding, choice of top color in cedar, and a cedar topped 12 string.

Interesting change, it bothered me at first because the 714ce is one of my fantasy I want guitars with the cedar top, but I was visiting my local Dusty Strings acoustic guitar store and noticed quite a few more cedar top guitars from the likes of Goodall, Collings and others, I'm sure Taylor has other wonderful offerings coming and I doubt as consumers we'll loose, it's just change to keep the market interested. I have to admit, for painted guitars, these look really nice.

Just because these guitars are pictured with a sunburst finish doesn't mean that the 714 will no longer have a cedar top. I'm sure that cedar will also be offered as a "modify a model" option as well.  I could go for a 714 with either an engelmann or cedar top as I think they both sound great with rosewood (or walnut or mahogany for that matter).

I'd like to see these kinds of appointments as an option for the non-cutaway acoustic series as well.
