One plus of owning a good number of guitars (currently 15) is that guitars relegated to the "forgotten" pile (such as my 1970 Yamaki or my 1954 Harmony Monterey archtop) can suddenly become good players again. Sort of GRS (guitar reacquaintance syndrome)
The same thing (GRS) occurs if one is frequently separated from their collection by geography for long periods of time...
Tim, are you able to take a guitar along while on business?
Yes, but it hasn't been one of my Taylors. Initially I'd planned to take along my GS Mini, but as I was traveling by commercial aircraft, I got a bit spooked about the baggage policies. While most airlines will try to accommodate a guitar as carry-on, they're not required to do so if all the space in the cabin is filled. So into the hold it would go, and I'm very distrustful of checked baggage handlers -- especially when the soft case that goes with the GS Mini wouldn't provide a lot of protection.
So over the past 15 months I brokered a deal with my brother to borrow his beginner guitar (a Yamaha Dreadnought) that I could transport from Pittsburgh to wherever the job took me and back. It's not a bad guitar for the money he paid for it; it plays and sounds OK. But by the same token, when I'd wander into the local Taylor dealers wherever I was I was quickly reminded that Yamaha guitars are
not Taylor guitars... Still, I wasn't worried about transporting the much cheaper Yamaha -- or leaving it in a hotel room for extended periods. I figured if something happened to it, I'd only be out a few hundred bucks to replace it for my brother. And it kept me practicing while I was away.
