Picked up a new axe today
« on: October 13, 2015, 07:55:17 AM »
I had been looking at the 814ce for a while and finally broke down. I went in to pick it up and the guy at the shop had just got in an 816ce and asked me to try it. I was blown away. Really punchy low end and really rich sound overall. I sat and played it for a couple of hours and couldn't leave without it. Has anyone else opted for the 816 over the 814?

Congratulations and welcome to the forum!  I have not had the opportunity to A/B the two body sizes.  Do you find the 816 to be as responsive to fingerstyle as the 814?  I would expect both strum very well.

Most of the time I sat and played the 816 in the shop I was finger picking. Finger style is mostly what I do and the 816 responded beautifully.

I really like the GS size.  It adds a little extra on the bottom end that I felt was needed.  Most of mine are GA's and I like them.  Taylor had not started making the GS when those were purchased.  Everything bought since the GS came out has been a x16 of some sort.  I fingerpick about 75% and strum about 25%.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Welcome, and congrats!   Yes I own 1  X16/ Grand Symphony and find it to be the richest sounding Taylor I own, so much color and Vib. Enjoy!

Yup - I did.  But I was also tempted by the new 614ce on the day I made my decision to buy my 816ce.  I spent an extra 2/3 hours on the day doing a direct A/B/C with the 614/814 and 816.  But like you, I just found the 816 to be unbeatable.  I mentioned somewhere else on this forum, my 816ce is not just the finest guitar I've ever owned - it's the finest guitar I've ever played!

Congratulations on yours - you've got a new friend for life there...
