mixed back and sides?
« on: April 09, 2015, 09:57:34 PM »
Has any builder done a popular guitar with the back and sides being different woods from each other?

I wonder how rosewood and maple would be together??

it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

That's a first for me......had never seen guitars like that. Elderly is a big Martin dealer, they get some pretty unique stuff.

I have to wonder whether there's really a perceptible sonic effect from mixing body woods like that -- the implication being the higher frequencies are enhanced by the use of Maple/Mahogany on the treble-string side of the guitar, and lower frequencies by Rosewood on the bass-string side...?  Given that the sound will radiate universally from the soundboard, does it all kind-of blends together to create a 'hybrid' sound of some kind...?  Or is it just an interesting cosmetic touch...?

I'm pretty sure I've seen some mixed-wood offerings from Blueberry Guitars, including mixed woods on the soundboard (here's one with a half-Cedar/half-Spruce soundboard).  Their guitars are reputed to be very compelling sonically, although I've not had an opportunity to sample one.  And the design craftsmanship is undeniable -- but also a bit too, shall we say, ornate for my tastes... :o

Anybody ever seen the Bourgeois harlequin guitar? I played it once, and it was indeed a wild ride:

You'll note that besides the two wood back, each side piece is different, and the two piece top was spruce/cedar as I recall...

My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood
