522 12 fret update
« on: July 23, 2014, 11:22:17 AM »
My 522 12 fret is now 6 months old. I have several great sounding guitars and this is one of them, but what impresses me is that this one has the the most comfortable neck and the lowest playable action of guitar I've ever owned. The humidity in my PA home ranges from desert in the winter to tropical in the summer, but this guitar, albeit with the Planet Wave Humidipaks installed in the case, stays perfect action wise. My Martins seen to go up and down 1/32" with the season and need a neck reset after a few years - at least the dovetail ones. So far, so good with my all mahogany GC.

I think what you're experiencing is pretty typical in the Mid-Atlantic region. here in NoVa, it can be so humid that I sweat profusely walking 100' all the way to so dry in the winter that my knuckles start to crack and bleed. My Humidipacks can last 5-6 months if start using a set in June.

My Humidipaks don't last long in the winter, maybe a month, but I had one dry as bone crystals in March, that feels like it's full of water now. I wonder if they are still good when they re-hydrate so extremely?

Oh, mine barely make it that long in the winter. If I put them in the beginning of Summer, they last quite a while. After that... a month, tops. When they get crunchy I take them and put them in my safe to absorb any moisture that builds up in it, then chuck them before they pop. Kind of like a silica pack.

Ed, some folks recharge their Humidipaks w/ various methods and report good results. I'm not willing to risk my guitars with a leaking Humidipak. I put an old set back in their original bag and sealed it. Opened the bag a few weeks later and one of the packs was oozing slime. That's all I needed to see. I received a frozen batch of Humidipaks (5 sets) back in January. Gonna order 'em earlier this year. BTW: Your 522 sounds like a keeper. :)
