NGD - 816ce
« on: July 10, 2014, 11:04:12 PM »
I went into Bizarre Guitar in PHX to test drive a few Martins. I've been a confirmed Martin player since 2006.  I found over the years though that my HD-28 has some limitations, or areas for improvement.  A nice cut-away, a decent pickup system, and how about a neck that doesn't need to be reset after 5 years?  The HD-28 is a booming cannon, but ...

Anyway, I found a new 2014 816ce.  Photos will be forthcoming.  I surprised myself that I fell in love with the tone and the volume.  The feel of the neck and the fit of the body on my lap is perfect.  The price was not to be beat.  I am a convert, though I'm not selling the Martin. The two shall peacefully coexist in my music room.

You are only as good as the practice you put in.

It seems that the new 800 series is impressing quite a few. I am looking forward to hearing them played at an upcoming Taylor road show.

Hi BD. Welcome to the UTGF. Congrats on your new 816ce. My Martin rarely gets jealous...it's a LXK2. ;) Glad you found us. Enjoy that new guitar. :)

Congrats~! I totally understand the value and features are there with the new 2014 800 series. But the tone is the most competitive with Martins than ever before. Not taking away anything from a great Martin. There is nothing like them. But these new 816/814/812/810 Taylors are incredible and bring so much value to table for gigging acoustic guitarists! A crowning achievement. Can't wait to see pics!

Isn't it cool that we have so many great guitars (manufacturers) out there to choose from? Congratulations on your new Taylor and welcome to the Taylor family. We're glad you joined us and hope you share your knowledge with us on this forum. You'll find the folks here very pleasant to spend your time with. Looking forward to your NGD pictures.

Congrats!  If I were in the market for any new guitar these days, the 816ce would probably be it.

IMHO, the new 800 series seems to be voiced to appeal to fans of the classic Martin sound, but with Taylor neck feel and playability, so probably the best of both worlds.  I have mostly divested the Martins in favor of Taylors, almost exclusively for neck feel, easy resets when needed (versus my Martin) and great intonation.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby
