NGD: All-Koa GC BTO!
« on: June 27, 2014, 12:52:14 PM »
Dear all!

About a month and a half ago, I posted about wanting to have an all-koa grand concert custom built. I even posted pictures of the wood sets that I picked:

After roughly only 4-5 weeks, Lincoln of Randee's Music called me up to say that its finally completed and being shipped over by Taylor! Lincoln was also kind enough to include pictures of my Koa Monster on the store's website. Tons of pictures on the following link (you could recognize the same wood sets used):

http://randeesmusic.com/shop/taylor-grand-concert-handpicked-koa-bto-7584/

Very happy with the outcome! Thanks to Taylor, Lincoln and Randee's Music. They're a pleasure to work with. Can't wait to receive my guitar soon.

Holy cow! That's a beautiful guitar. If, for some reason, you choose to give it away. Please consider giving it to me?

Wowzers, I love me some sapwood!  That guitar is just gorgeous. I bet you're drooling to get your hands on it.

Thanks guys!

Yup, can't wait to see and try the guitar in person. I asked Lincoln of Randee's Music how does it sound (and if it sounds too bright because its a koa GC) and he said that it actually sounds "warmer" than some of the grand auditoriums he played, probably because of the adirondack bracing. I think I got myself something special to replace my long lost 714 which I bought back in 2001 :)

Beautiful wood, to be sure.  But I'd definitely prefer that topwood as the back and the non-sapwood for the top.  Just my thoughts anyway ...has it been planed to thickness yet?

Yes, I chose the tropical vine inlay as I felt that it has the "Hawaiian vibe", just like Koa. I was lucky to get a "jet black" fingerboard which further highlights the inlay.

About the wood sets, I do agree that the sapwood (Set #53) would make a "prettier" backwood, but I had no choice in this as Taylor already "earmarked" it as a top wood. Although the wood set for the back and sides (Set #52) are not as brilliant as the top wood, still that was the best that I could get at the time (as the other back/side wood sets looked more like Grade "A"s). Still, i think it turned out nicely in the end. For reference, here again is the link for the completed product:

Oops, sorry ...I had missed the link of the finished product (silly me!!).

But ooohhhhh-so-nice ...what a koa-fest that wood set is!  And the fretboard inlay is very nicely executed: I love it running along the bass edge.  Congrats!!  :)

Super looking - love the dark binding - sets off the grain nicely and the vine neck inlay makes it quite unique.

Congrats on that beauty!!! Wow!

I love the top wood! Very unique and one of a kind. I also like the headstock in koa as well...don't think I've ever seen that before.

Let us know how you like it once you played it for a bit! :D
