It's beautiful but I could never own that guitar. I'd constantly try to make 'whale sounds' with one-string slides. Nobody else would think it was funny but me. #knowyourweaknesses

OMG that is gorgeous! I never knew Taylor made anything like this. What is the story behind it?

There have not been many gallery series guitars in a long time.  Maybe they got busy with everything else, or maybe the downturn in the economy put the damper on that program.  But over the years there have been the koi, the pelican, the whales, the Cujo, the liberty Tree, and a few others that I probably forgot.  Plus the various signature models, which also seem to have disappeared.  There were also the color 600 series that were big for a while.  You can still get some colors as BTO, but you don't see many bright red or purple or green Taylors anymore.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

The Cujo and Pelican were not part of the Gallery Series. The Cujo was manufactured in 1997, and the Limited's of 2003 included the Pelican among several other special instruments such as the Running Horses maple jumbo. The Gallery Series happened somewhere in between these dates. There was the whales (subject of this thread), turtles (on a quilted maple GA) and the koi inlaid in a blue dreadnought. I thought that there was a fourth, but I can't remember - a ship theme perhaps??

the cujo, made in 97, as strumming has correctly stated, is not a gallery series guitar
http://www.elderly.com/items/20U-10593.htm

the liberty tree was made in 02

& the liberty tree t5, made in 08 was the
second model in the builder's reserve series

the pelican was a 03 NAMM LTD model
http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240112
apparently some did not have a Custom Shop style NAMM label, but
i'm not sure why this is listed as a 04, when the label clearly shows 03
https://reverb.com/item/12019-taylor-pelican-ltd-2004-myrtlewood

there were other NAMM LTDs, such as the ruby red quilted maple PS-LTD
http://img.audiofanzine.com/image.php?lang=fr&identifier=id&size=normal&module=product&product_id=182574

also in the 03 NAMM LTD series were the NS72 brazilian/cedar, running horses sunburst maple jumbo, cowboy sunburst maple
dreadnought, & hot rod, available in natural or transparent black, maple grand auditorium & jumbo (the last 3 with stained finishes)

the 600 series is available in transparent koi & pacific blue, black, borrego red, cherry,
cherry black, honey or tobacco sunburst, gloss black or amber back & sides with natural top
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/series/600?items_per_page=15

the 700s have a standard vintageburst finish
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/series/700?items_per_page=15

the T3, T5 & T5z standard & pro are offered in various stains & burst finishes
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/electric

green & purple are not as popular as they once were -
they added borrego red & cherry blackburst options, but colored finishes are all but "uncommon"

I'd communicated with the seller some time back on  that '04 Pelican' -

If you look close, there's some inlay missing from the first bird and the top of the headstock appears to have been damaged and sanded down on an angle.  Sad some of those things are not disclosed.

That is a remarkable guitar.  The back and sides are a fine example of zircote

Beautiful guitar!  When I bring the Guild F512 to play at church for the kids, they just love to look at the beautiful inlay on its headstock and neck... I could only imagine what they would do if I showed up with a guitar like this!  :o
