Unique TINEO Custom DN
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:04:45 PM »
Ive been meaning to post this for a while, as I thought some of the members here would likely find this piece interesting..
This is a custom DN, made with a wood called Tineo (a hardwood from Chile).

I bought it at the Taylor Friends and Family sale last December. When I picked it up, I quickly noticed it had some very interesting features (besides the beautiful exotic wood and adirondack top), like solid kerfing, special bracing, side bracing, and tortoise shell inlay for the rosette and body. Its also satin finished. One of the Taylor reps there said he believed Andy Powers made it himself. Sure enough, I briefly talked to Andy about it in the Taylor room at the NAMM show in January, and he absolutely knew the guitar and did build it.
He said he loved how it came out and sounded, but that the wood took a long time to dry, and thus wouldn't work well for any type of production run. Only one of the 3-4 sets they had made it to a final guitar, and its essentially a one-off, not to bee seen again.

Im not generally a dread guy, but I must say the unique looks and huge tone of this had me hooked at first strum..

Davwir carzy beautiful dreadnought The adirodack is fantastic. The plain and simple look of this dread is perfect! Love that top purfling,  What kind of wood is that?  I'm sure it sounds like no other Taylor dread. The adirondack takes a little break in time, but once it comes You'll be astounded,
 Congrats,(very custom build) I love it!     ;)
p.s.
I need Taylor Dread ::)

The tone is delicious too.. lol
Seriously, one of the biggest and best sounding acoustics Ive ever played. And Ive owned and played a lot of them.
Serious rumble, you can feel it fully resonating when you play it..
I generally love smaller body guitars for comfort, but none of those (in any brand) can put out sound quite like this can..
Im sure the custom bracing, Adi top, and lack of gloss finish are all helping..
Andy said to expect it to blossom even more in a few years..

The top purfling and rosette are actually tortoise shell (which I don't think Ive ever seen done before either).
Its very subtle, and hard to notice except on very close inspection.
I like it, though

I like! ;)  The Adi top is so nice a creamy compared to most Adirondack tops.  On the back I noticed that the two prominent figuring almost looks as if it is braided.  Beautiful are you going to sell it or keep it?

Wow!  That's a really nice-looking Dreadnought!  Very interesting wood!  The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have a cutaway -- but then you'd lose some of the visual symmetry with the wood grain on the back, so it may be just as well...

Of the 'big three' (Rosewood, Mahogany, Maple), what's the closest wood to which you'd compare the tone?

Hmmm. Of the 3, Id say its probably closest to the Rosewood family...
Almost Cocobolo-like, not too surprising being a dense south american hardwood..

Beauty of a guitar! A great find. Not to be a downer, but looking at your photos I see a nice clunk on the back of her neck. Was that like that when you got her at the friends and family sale?

Rosewood would have been my first guess.

Very cool guitar!  Enjoy it!  And definitely give us on the forum first crack at it if you ever decide to part ways with it!  I'm not a huge fan of Rosewood's tone, but if it's more like Cocobolo I could almost talk myself into it just because of the uniqueness of the wood -- especially since Andy Powers has acknowledged Taylor probably won't do another guitar in Tineo...

You have great attention to detail.. lol
Yep, there is a small ding in the back of the neck, that was already there when I bought it.
