2011 Taylor Mahogany Dn-ce ltd
« on: February 17, 2014, 10:20:39 AM »
Hi I have a question. I just got my first ever Taylor guitar and wondered about the model number. It says it's a mahogany Dn ltd. Yet it has a cutaway..shouldn't the model number reflect this? Also how does the sound compare to other models is it based off a particular series 300 or so.
Any info would be great..I've searched and can't find any dn cutaways with electric for the mahogany 2011 series and just wondered why. Thanks again

Hello there, and welcome to the board!  :D

I am certain someone with more knowledge of the product line will chime in, but a quick google check of 2011 "Ltd" shows a Spring Ltd with mahogany.  Do a google search and you'll find some old listings with pics, appointments, etc. for this "Spring Limited." But for a definitive answer, call the factory with your serial number and they will give you the entire rundown of its full build specs.

As for a cutaway, this is not uncommon for a "ltd," though yes, a "DN" normally does means sans-cutaway in their nomenclature.  And the 300s made with sapele b/s is a first-cousin to your mahogany.  Some prefer the former species, others the latter; like all things "tone" personal preference abound but to my ears, I've always tended to favor mahogany's timbre as it has always striked me as slightly "thicker" in the mids and mid-lows, at least in my experience (though no disparagement to 300s in any way whatsoever!).

And as is tradition 'round these parts, post a pic when you can and we'll all celebrate with you!

Thanks for the info..I've never had a Taylor before previous in the Martin camp but I saw the guitar in the shop and fell in love with it..what made it worse was that the wood was dry and the fret buzz was present..so I bought her and have left her into a luthier to get fixed, it's currently undergoing some treatment and I knew I could have returned it but like a sad person I am I felt bad for the guitar and know if I returned it it will just completely dry out and probably sit there until it cracked..and it would be a shame for the guitar to go through that so she's at the luthier were she is getting humidified and brought back to normal. When I get it back I'll post a pic of it. Thanks for the info and I'm happy to be sitting in the Taylor camp. Cheers mate

if i remeber correctly, ES & cutaway were options, with the option designation(s) left off -
this spring 11 mahogany LTD would technically be a GSeLTD, but there is no "e" shown on the label

i used to own a 05 810ceL10 that had no ES & no cutaway & the label still had "ce" on it

congrats on saving a "whole 'hog"  8) &

Here she is.. Forgot I had this pic before she entered triage. The model number on the inside really confused  me so thanks for clearing that up, so basically a dread with a cutaway  is a Gs?

Thanks for everyone's help Btw..

A dread with a cutaway is still a dread. A GS body is different from the dreadnought body, cutaway or not. Welcome to the UTGF. :)

your guitar is a dreadnought/DN/X10 with a cutaway & ES, which were options -
these have with ES, but no cutaway & the longest model designation i've seen on a Taylor (Mahogany DN LTD)

the closest "standard" model equivalent of your guitar would be a 520ce FE

Thanks Michael, that makes sense, I listened to the 520 on YouTube and yeah it sounds incredibly similar. They sure don't make it easy with their model numbers a lot of variations esp when the inside model number doesn't reflect what I'm looking at ( cutaway and electrics) So thanks mate for clearing that up. Hopefully I'll get many many years out of playing it..I better or my wife will kill me for buying a new guitar but watching TV instead lol.
Thanks again Michael
