Should I do it?

So I figure being on a Taylor forum I know what the answer will be but I am hoping for some feedback. I currently have a 2007 Gibson J200 and I am considering a trade for a 1996 Taylor 910. The guy wants me to also give him cash to boot. That seems a bit steep. What are the opinions on the 910 vs the J200? I know they are different animals but I mean in general terms of value, resell ability etc..

I would sell the J200 and go for a 2014 810 with the CV bracing and newest ES, then you would have better value and resalability (sp)

There is another thread here that talks about the 2014 models of Taylor dreds receiving new bracing and a revoicing.  I'd probably wait for that to happen before doing anything.  If you like the revoicing, great.  If not, you can always still get a 2013 model.

The 910 is worth more than the J200. But I agree, with the folks above. There are better ways to put a Taylor dred in your hands, especially if you are not in a panic to buy one.

I have a 2010 910 and I cannot say enough great things about it. The value on the 910's go up everyday. I would never part with mine. They only made 57 in 2010. I have played many Taylors, Martins, a few H&D's, one Collins and a few Gibson's that I would buy and I have yet to find one that puts a smile on my face like the 910. I have played an old 510 that was amazing and I would love to have that one. You don't see many 910's that much and I have seen my share of music stores along the East Coast. I would trade and put up some cash, you won't regret it but only if you love the way it sounds and plays. When I got mine I was looking at an 810 and only wish I could have played them side by side. I love how clear it sounds and the articulation and sustain it has. Hope this helps, keep us posted.

1990's 910's seem to be available for only a little more than half the cost of a new one, so definitely consider an older model.  Maybe you might even be able to hang onto the Gibson on that basis.........................

I like me a good Gibby.  That said, there is nothing special (to me, no disrespect) about a J200.  Nice, but lots of em around. 

The Taylor 900s, OTOH, are quite a bit more unique and special, particualrly the pre-NTs.  This in itself is no reason to trade for it if one doesn't care for the tone and the play of said 900.  But if you're talking about buying sight unseen, I think your chances are excellent given the 900 sets the tonal and quality-build bar pretty high.

I'm a Taylor guitar guy. I own 4 Taylors,  a 2007 GC6, 2008 GA8, 2002, 710, and 2013  810.. I would keep the J-200... 2007 is a good year for a Gibson acoustic guitar. If your J-200 sounds good and plays good keep it. If you trade your J-200 you will regret it.

actually i like Gibsons... if you find the right one. i do appreciate Taylor's consistancy a lot more as i rarely have the opportunity to try most guitars before i buy. if a try one in a music shop in Columbus, i know the one i order when i get back home will be the same.

I've always contended that the 90’s Taylor's have a better sound than the ones after the NT neck change.  Not that the NT change is responsible for that change in sound, but there were usually other design changes that resulted in a change in "the Taylor Sound".  I think Bob Taylor just wanted to go after a different sound about that time.  I just happen to like the old ad better.  Nothing more than personal preference.

If you've had a chance to play the Taylor and like the way it sounds I would go for the Taylor.  I know I'm going to catch a load of flak for saying this, but recent Gibsons don't impress me.
