Another few words of wisdom .... practice with your eyes closed. Playing by feel is better than trying to think too much. When you can play a piece with your eyes closed, you know you have it.
What I play ...
Bob Dylan
The Band
Neil Young
John Prine

Favorite player: David Bromberg

Back when I was a fledgling middle school trumpet player, we were assigned to play scales for 30 minutes a day.  Nuts to that, and I rarely (if ever) did it.  Instead, I learned to pick out by ear my favorite tunes, TV theme songs from my favorite shows, church songs, etc.  In other words I turned it into fun and interesting exercises.  Scales are like reading the dictionary.  Thorough and systematic (technically it's all in there) but not as interesting as reading a good novel.  Put another way, you can play tennis (fun) or you can do calisthenics like push-ups and jumping jacks, which are fine for conditioning but not nearly as much fun.  Having fun helps you engage and make far more progress in the long run.  While I still don't read music notation as well as I probably should, I can play much by ear on several instruments.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

I think the eyes closed idea is very good advise.

one more bit of advise:  Feed the Pig(save money).
He who loses money, loses much; he who loses a friend, loses more; he who loses faith, loses all.

Pick your friends carefully. Especially if they don't have pickguards.

An alternative is to play the guitar in the dark.
