Taylor Peghead Inlay - My Two Hobbies Intersect
« on: March 20, 2013, 02:07:05 PM »
Origin of the Taylor Peghead Inlay...from Bob Taylor's "Guitar Lessons" Book:
There was an old green thermometer hanging on the wall of the bathroom at the workshop that was made by a company that was also called Taylor.  The three (Taylor) owners thought the thermometer logo had a nice typeface, so they used that as the inspiration for the Taylor peghead inlay.

One of the hobbies that I enjoy with my husband is making pure maple syrup here in Northern Michigan.  The other day, we were bottling a batch of maple syrup and I smile each time we do so.  We use a Taylor thermometer in the bottler.  It's so cool to compare the logo on the Taylor thermometer to the inlay on my 414 peghead.  They sure resemble each other!

Just a cool way my two hobbies, that are dear to me, intersect.

Cool... (couldn't resist the temperature pun).

It's great when happenstance makes enjoyable things coincide.

We just got done with this year's syrup season. Just thought I repost this thread for the newer forum folks who didn't see it earlier. I still find it very interesting. But, maybe I'm just weird. :-\

they still use the same style logo on their thermometers

some of their other products have a more "modern" look

i hope that the headstock & logo font remains & is not "updated"

it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Michael, our maple syrup thermometers (like the one in my original post) have the logo like Bob would have used to design the Taylor guitar peghead logo. Yes, hopefully he doesn't go modern.....I doubt it will change.

Jersey, you are so right. I will have to tell my husband I NEED a 600 series MAPLE guitar!  ;D....an observation that I had never thought of. I did get a new dulcimer about a year ago and the builder did a maple leaf on the headstock. So, that was pretty cool.  But, I'm still liking the maple Taylor idea! Maybe a HV GS Mini would be an option, but my husband likes the hog....so I'm considering that.

My "toys" are instruments (including Taylor guitars), my husbands "toys" are maple syrup equipment.
