I personally prefer no pickguard ... I am predominantly a fingerstyle player and even when I use a pick, I play with a light touch ... as for looks, just my opinion, a Dread looks more classic with a pickguard, but the other Taylor body styles, I like better w/o the pickguard ... if you don't need it, don't get it ... if you find you do, you can always add one of the clear or static varieties ... my opinions ... YMMV

Going to be ordering a new 512ce. I love the look of the cedar top w/o a pickguard with the abalone rosette. I'm going to be playing mostly, if not entirely, fingerstyle.  Do I need a clear pickguard to play it safe, or will I be ok with no pickguard? I'm not a heavy strummer, but when I'm in the mood, I'll pull out my 414. So, any thoughts for the 512ce?
If you don't like the looks of a pickguard I would go with a clear one just incase for the times you may use a pick. Cedar is a softer wood and dings easier. I have one on mine to match the binding, but on my other guitars I have clear pickguards on them.

Just for the record, my 1997 cedar/walnut GA came with no pickguard, and has no pick marks. Regardless of the topwood, Taylor's finish is the most protective I have experienced. My vote would still be for no pickguard.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

You all have been very helpful.  I think I'm going to go "no pickguard" when I order the guitar.  Then, I'll probably pick up one of their static clear pickguards down the road.  It sounds like with my type of playing I'll be ok.  I appreciate everyone's feedback.

When you order the guitar ask them to put the static clear in the glove box. I think it free when you order a guitar but it may cost you if you wait til later.

No pickguard. Definately. You could always add one later if you really felt the need.

After 12 years (nearly 4 of them with me - I have used it a lot, about 75%/25% fingerstyle/light strumming) my 2001 712, which has no pick guard, was just starting to show some very slight scatches under the sound hole a couple of months ago.  They polished out very easily using polish intended to remove scratches from car paintwork (T cut) followed by a polish with Turtle Wax.  A small price to pay for the advantages of not having a pick guard I think.

Very helpful, thank you to everyone. I will probably order the guitar today or tomorrow, w/o a pickguard, but see if they will throw in the clear static one.

I have one of those static guards on my GS6. You literally can't see it unless you look pretty hard. I've seen enough guitars where the finish was damaged by the sound hole (even by fingerstyle players) that I can see no reason why not.

The trick with the clear PG is to use the "water technique" to avoid air bubbles. Works every time.

The water technique? That's not swimming guitars is it?   :o

OK, I'll bite. Where can I find out more about this technique?
