Honeyburst Top on 512ce - Which Wood?
« on: February 19, 2013, 12:23:48 PM »
A Cedar top is standard on a 512ce. If I go with the Honeyburst top option, would they still do a cedar top or would they switch to the Engelmann Spruce?  I'm not a sunburst lover, but have always loved Taylor's Honeyburst. Since my husband is getting me the GC that I want, I may just have to go with the Honeyburst.

It's long been my understanding that the finish doesn't "take" as well to Cedar as it does Spruce.

This is the Cedar top on my 2011 Spring LTD GA. Not sure if they called this Honeyburst or Edgeburst but it looks good on Cedar.

If it were me, I'd have the dealer I'm ordering the guitar through ask Taylor this question.  They will give you an honest answer as to which wood will work best for that finish.

Have you played the 512ce with both Cedar and Engelmann spruce tops?  Which one did you like the sound of better?

How cool that your husband is doing this for you.  :)

I've played the cedar/mahogany, but not the other. Really liked it. Going to a different store this weekend.  I have a 414, so I'm actually leaning towards the warmth of the cedar/mahogany.  I'm not a loud fingerstyle player, but rather looking for that guitar that is warm that I can wrap my arms around.  My hubby is so supportive.

For reference, here's a honeyburst finish on an engelmann-topped 514:

My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

That's a beauty there, Cigarfan!  How's the Kolaya coming along?  I've been watching that build from a distance.

2. 2007 Baby (BT1)
3. 2002 Fender CIJ Telecaster w/ Bigsby & Mastery Bridge

Brad sent the guitar out for finish a couple weeks ago. Should be coming back any day now. Then the tuners and strings added and intonation work. Almost there!

Thanks for asking. :)

I really like Strum's and Cigar's alot. Another VERY good one is Daryl's vintage burst on the 716 he has on market place forum...think that's the best looking one I've seen. If I could have sold a kid or a car or something, I would have pounced on Daryl's.  Congrats on all of your bursts. I'm just proud to view them

Speaking of 'bursts, I saw a full Koa GA BTO yesterday and it had the nicest edge burst that I've seen.  Very subtle, but very effective.  Here's the link: http://wildwestguitars.com/Taylor/Electric-Guitars/dis-prod_1318_standard.html
