Taylor Wood Smell
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:05:13 AM »
I humidify all my guitars be it Taylors, Martins and so on. When I played my very first own Taylor (DN4) it had a so so wood smell. After it was propperly humidified and gotten a year older a really nice wood smell has come out. I can smell it when I am playing at times. It is a very pleasent wood smell. Now My Taylor DN3 has done the same thing. Now what I find very cool is that you can tell the differance in the smell and I can tell you by smell alone which one is the DN4 Ovangkol and which one is the DN3 Sapele. Both these unique woods has it's own distictive smell. Any one here notice this.

Oh yeah! Each wood has its own distinctive aroma - on Taylors or any brand for that matter. Rosewood, mahogany, maple, walnut...all have a great scent. Koa and myrtle seem to be more subtle in the aroma department...in my experience.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

I've noticed that "raw cut lumber" type smell of the inside of a couple of my guitars.  I think it may have more to do with how much it's been cased as opposed to being out in the open-which would speed up the loss of such smells.  I haven't experimented with humidification releasing/rejuvinating these smells.  Not having a very good nose, I doubt I could tell the difference between woods though.

I love the aroma therapy provided by guitars. As you say, each tonewood is different. My preference is the Rosewood family but wood in general ... it's all good. I have a build underway right now and the luthier builds with "double sides". When he asked me what kind of wood I wanted (for the inside) my thoughts immediately jumped to aroma. No one is gonna see them so, why not. Rosewood was my pick. In that same vein, when the luthier decided on the wood to brace the bevels (also inside) he chose Spanish Cedar based on our prior discussion on aroma.

Great thread. I love the smell of a guitar. It inspires music!

I love the smell of my Taylor. My Guild doesn't have as much of a wood smell anymore, probably because it's 33 years old, but I have noticed that the humidifier I keep in the sound hole is starting to bring back that nice woody smell.

I think that Martins have the strongest wood smell. To me they almost smell like humidors. My Taylor has a nice wood smell. I can smell it when I play it, and especislly when I first open the case. Another reason why I keep it in the case - it preserves the smell.

My Martin M-36 has the strongest wood smell of all of my guitars.  It is a few years old now and still when it comes to wood smell it is stronger than newer guitars.

I've definitely noticed that the 1998 415 has a sweet smell to the ovangkol. I seem to remember a comment in an old issue of Wood & Steel. The guitar player was telling Taylor that
he played his  guitar outside sometimes...near his home.  It seemed that the bees loved the smell of the guitar too! They would constantly hover around the guitar whenever he took it out.

I wish I smelled that good, er... I wish my sense of smell was that good.

I had to go smell mine, it did smell good, hadn't noticed it before. I'm a Carpenter by Trade, I may be desensitized.

There is a reason Martin guitars have that odor.  The kerfing is made from spanish cedar.  The same wood many humidors are made from.

Yes...I didn't mention ovangkol before, but my sinker/ovangkol has a lush, sweet scent to it. It's one of this guitar's many pleasures!
