2004 710 L9 Brazilian/Adirondack(red spruce)
Just got this one.Mint, killer sound.
nice :)
congrats :D

i was wondering if there was any other designation than 710L9 on the soundhole label,
as the standard 710L9s were engelmann/eirw, or perhaps it was a LTD run ordered by a
specific shop, as has been done in past by buffalo bros, dave's, gruhn's & wildwood guitars

either way, i imagine it's a pretty rare bird ...
thanks for sharing the pics  8)

Says "Short Scale" between the Model & Ser#s. I got it from the orig. owner who bought it from a store somewhere, that ordered it that way to compete w/very high end Martins etc.
I talked to my Rep @ Taylor ,he confirmed everything, and said records indicated it was AA Brazilian.

i'd be curious to hear your take on the contrasts
between those two guitars & the 410ce as well :D

The Braz & Adi is much more powerful sounding, while the EIR/Eman is a little on the "sweeter" side. Both have great response and tone only different. The 410 SS is a killer instrument.Rattle the windows volume w/more mids.Cuts a mic like a razor, have to be careful not to red line by moving too close. On a whim, last Sun. @ open mic,I miked it as well as using the ES. Skeet(sound man) set me up out front, direct from the amp,SM 57 on the amp,SM 58 on the guitar .Amp is a Marshall AS50R,which I used for right ear monitor, left side fills sounded great. With Skeet at the board,it's the best stage sound I've heard in a while.
After my set, the host played it w/2 solo guitarist/singers and a "Jam" group. The house sound blew me away. The 410 fit perfectly and sounded great.
Both myself and Bucky got great comments on our sound.I still have a couple beers in the hole. ;)

The 614ce is curly, the 612ce is flamey, and the Baby maple is mostly flamey as well.

I'm pretty sure "curly" and flamey" are the same thing.

Nice guitars!

Here is the pic...it looks like one of the guitars is quilted/bird's eye maple. I used to own a 614ce which had the flamed maple, but if I had known they could have made it with the quilted maple, that would have been my choice.

Is flamed maple more popular than quilted maple? Does anyone know why it seems to be used more often?

Taylor doesn't use Birdseye maple for their guitars. They use quilt or flame (aka "curly"). I think Bob may have used Birdseye many, man years ago on a couple of guitars that he actually built, but I'm pretty sure it's never been used on production guitars.

Curly Maple is more popular, if for no other reason that it's far more readily available...

If I've been using these terms incorrectly, then my apologies.  My 612ce is clearly flamey, the BT3 is also flamey.  My 614ce has hints of true flame but also other "curly" areas.

i've seen more 'pure' bird's eye on electric maple guitar necks & fretboards,
but there have been some regular production Taylors with 'mixed-figure' maple

here's a good video that explains the different types of maple -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJMLE7G2IIk
around 2:40 flamed, curly, fiddleback & tiger stripe come from the same tree (different cuts)
around 4:10 is about quilted maple ... in terms of highly figured quilted maple, it's pretty rare

bubble quilt, touches of bird's eye (00 614ce)

sausage quilt, bit of bird's eye (84 650)

not bird's eye, but still kind of cool, imho
'time capsule' 1st production year 614ce - ultra-tight flame (fiddleback/tiger stripe ??? )

Taylor uses nothing that's referred to as "bubble quilt" or "sausage quilt"...
