Aren't we only talking about finish "checking" here, not actual finish separation from the wood?  Only one of my guitars has a gloss finish ('93 555) and it only has a few "checks" on the back of the neck up where it curves into the headstock.  I like it, can't feel it and nothing's coming off or separating.  I think the necks on 555s were satin finish though, not gloss, though it has turned glossy from play.  Now, on the subject at hand I have nothing to add, sorry.

Not a 900 series, but I have a '95 810 that is AMAZING!!!  No problems with the finish on it at all and it plays and sounds great!  Everyone who plays it loves it and it always gets compliments anywhere I play it!  I have a '12 814ce and I like the 810 much better!  It plays better and sounds better as far as tone goes.  I have heard several people call the 90's the golden-era for Taylor guitars and based on my '95, I can see why!!

Hi Dennis , Welcome to UTGF,
I've had too many 900s to remember them all.
 But I've had 1st genneration 912s, 914s and the 910s, 97-2000s

I currently have 4 second generation 900s the one with forward shift x bracing tops all Engelmann topped

I sold my DMSM 914 which was a 3rd generation ( CV ) bracing body

 Here's a short take
The 1st gen. were nice sounding but lacked warmpth ,deepth and volume.

The 2nd gen , were now louder with more punch, and presents

The current CV braced tops as of 2010 now have a very warm and organic tone, less of the sparkle of the two prior gens.
That DMSM was the best sounding x14 I had very held and played.

My current 2004 L7s (Brazilians) are just fine and have gotten better with age.
The 2006 914ce Ltd. (Coco/Engelmann) Is a excellent combo love it too.

Again in short the early one wer just less in sound all around.
But the necks of the non NT guitar were thinner feeling. If you like that.

Off the subject, but just for metion. My Fall 2008 GAce -C  is a 900 with adirondack CV  braced Sitka top with Coco. This one is the biggest sounding, and on top of my list . ;)

Hi, welcome to the forum!!

If you get a 2002 or older Taylor 914s, you will notice the gloss finish of sides/back cracking off already. Not a pretty sight...  :-[
I have a 90's 900 series guitar and except for one minor ding, this guitar is in mint condition!
I do not have ant finish cracking off at all.

I wonder what production years are the first generation and second/ third generations?

Do anyone know?
