I've actually heard two complaints that the lighter mass (ebanoid/ebony vs metal) changes the sound in a negative way.
Of course, like everything with guitars, that's subjective.

Randy, I got them from Brian Wong who advertises them on the AGF classifieds.

Ebick, Bill didn't steer me away, but did note the turtle would be small due to the shape of Taylor's trc. I went ahead with it anyway & am pleased with how it turned out. I like your SYF trc, the abalone in the circle is sharp. Very cool.

I like the fact that the ebonoid buttons are significantly lighter than the metal buttons. I don't see how they could possibly affect the tone of the guitar, mine still sounds awesome!

Why are the black tuning pegs better than the gold ones?

Actually, I prefer the gold ones.  It's just a matter of preference isn't it.

Anything that changes the mass of the headstock can influence the way the entire guitar vibrates.  Not so much tone, but MANY posts have been made on several forums about a change in sustain when replacing tuning machines and/or buttons.
It doesn't happen equally on every stringed instrument, but it has happened.
Some folks have liked the result, others have switched back because there was a negative net result (to their ears, it's ALL subjective).

FWIW, my change was purely aesthetic.  I think the ebony looks better on the headstock.  Plus, they don't get smudgy like the gold buttons do.  I saw no impact (positive or negative) on how the guitar sounds.

Makes a guitar look vintage.
Shiny Gold makes a guitar look store bought new.
Vintage old seems more noteworthy.
Sustains its value.

As far as weight is concerned, all I know is, if I pull on the neck hard enough it sounds like a whammy bar.. That is until I hear it crack..

I like the look of Gotoh in antique gold they the best investment you can give a guitar.  no smudge marks, the finish does not wear off, and IMHO they have the cool factor at a rate of 21:1 ;)

Some people like the appearance of the wood ones but the metal ones are not prone to cracking.
