Rules meant to be broken
« on: June 24, 2012, 03:35:15 PM »
Recently I had the flooring from one of the bathrooms in my home redone. The bathroom is actually two rooms with the smaller room housing the bath and commode. The larger room has a double sink vanity, and had carpet on the floor. We had it removed and replaced with tile. Now that the room has the classic bathroom acoustics, I tried out all my guitars in there. They all sounded great, but there's one I cannot play in there, because the volume and overtones of this guitar are overwelming. My cedar topped walnut GA is the one to which I'm referring. Who says that cedar can't stand up to spruce?!
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Was it common back in the olden days? I think Cedar tops sound fantastic for GAs, definitely prefer it to Sitka, and I'm a heavy strummer - not so much for GSs though, which end up sounding too muddy due to the significant amount of bass response.

It has been quoted many times on this forum that Cedar tops do not have the head room that Spruce tops do. ???

"Back in the olden days", cedar tops were a rarity on steel string flat-top acoustic guitars. They were much more commonly used on nylon string classical guitars, because the cedar responded to a lighter touch. As such, the truism is that cedar cannot hold up to spruce in the volume department. I found out that this simply isn't true back in '97. For you, it is simply a "modern" matter of fact....

Taylor used cedar on the 710 'back in the day' (cedar was standard on all 700s 98-00) -
i've played a GS-RC (06 'GS7') that retained its clarity when driven hard

this 716ce sounds pretty clear to me, but it may not to others -
imho, i think technique has a lot to do with it, but one likes what one likes
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

I guess that means that if I were playing a cedar-topped guitar in tiled floor kitchen, I'd be cooking with G.A.S.

Yabut, do you have to take the bathroom with you when you play in public?  ;)

No, wait!  If the tile makes the difference, see if Taylor will do a BTO with cedar and TILE!  ;D

Yeah, I know - back to my corner.   :-X

How about tiled headphones that you can plug into your ES? Anyway, I'm playing the cedar-topped one tonight, so I'll have to play in a less live-sounding room (lol)
