new bridge pins
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:13:37 PM »
I have a new TRC by Bill Nichols arriving soon. To compliment the MOP inlay cover I would like to add bridge pins that have MOP dots. I tried searching the forum for recommendations with no luck. I have never bought bridge pins before so any advice on where to look or what to get would be appreciated. These are what I am considering.

Thanks.

I would contact one of the forum vendors.  I know my local Taylor dealer has loads of bridge pins for sale.

Best person I have found for pins/saddles/etc is Bob Colosi. Reminds me of Taylor when it comes to customer service. And usually when you call/order you are dealing directly with him. And man does he have product! Really nice stuff.

I'll second Bob Colosi. Great service, fast shipping, and great products. Replaced both my saddle and bridge pins with bone.

Third + here for Bob Colosi. His stuff is pretty amazing if you are looking for quality pins and saddles.

So I have found some pins I like at Colasi's and now Im thinking of picking up a bone saddle as well. If I do, how easy is the install? I am a Journeyman Tradesman by proffesion so I do have the mechanical ability and tools to do it so I guess my question is if it is worth it to pay someone or not?

You will definitely be able to do it. The contour and the compensation of the bridge are already done.
The length, height,  and the thickness are a little oversize for you to fit. I used sandpaper to fit mine.
Looks perfect, and sounds good. Bob includes instructions as well.
On my 810, the bone took away a little "brittleness" in the tone. It is smooth, loud, and balanced...

I've gotten all my bridge pins from Custom Inlay. Here's the link:

http://shop.custominlay.com/

Most of my guitars have water buffalo bridge pins, because I like the way they enhance my guitars' tone, giving them a bit more "in your face" presence. Dot inlays are offered in many options including MOP. I ordered MOP inlaid pins for my 2001 514 in in order to match the MOP position dots on the fingerboard. Here's a photo:

Custom Inlay also has a bridge pin size guide which is very helpful. I highly recommend them.
