** The Official UTGF Dave Matthews Thread**
« on: December 14, 2011, 07:10:05 PM »
Wanted to start a thread to host all things Dave Matthews.

I'll start with something I've shared elsewhere and that is picture encyclopedia of the Taylor guitars Dave plays, common tunings for these guitars, and some of the well know songs that were written on them.  Hope you enjoy!

Now, let the discussion of all things Dave continue.  8)

Taylor 914C 6-string acoustic w/Venetian cutaway (Standard tuning)

Taylor 914C 6-string acoustic w/Florentine cutaway (Half Step Down: The Last Stop; Drop D: Don't Drink The Water, Crush, Shake Me Like A Monkey)

Wow.  Great thread DMBFan41.  Does Dave not play his Martin acoustics anymore?  I was a huuuge DMB fan in college, but haven't kept up with them much in the last 10 years or so.  Glad to see he still gets a lot of love.

Glad to see other fans.  Dave still plays his Martins (DM3MD, D35, D28) but mainly on solo gigs and breathtaking collaborations with Tim Reynolds.

Dave will always get the love in my house.  My 6 y.o. daughter loves him and probably rivals any fan on knowing lyrics.

Eat, drink, and be merry..Christmas!

And that one!

Much thanks for sharing this clip Michael.  As you could maybe imagine, we got one on DVD.  Me and the girls watch it at least once a month.

I remember the first time I heard what would become the song Butterfly in that movie...awesome.

There it is.  The "Holy Grail" of Taylors.  That 914c has probably been heard by more people than any other Taylor ever made.  I have wanted one for years just from watching Dave play it forever.

Yes, that 914c is gorgeous. Love to have a high end Taylor like that some day!

What I do have is the same model guitar Dave played much of the '90's, his old Yamaha CJ818sb. Fantastic sounding guitar, got mine in 1983 and they stopped making them in '91. You can see him playing it in "Satellite", also "Stay (Wasting Time)", particularly towards the end of the video:

LOL.  Good observation.  Matthews is a pretty soft-spoken dude and this carries over into his singing (vocal projection) too.

Only after performing, myself, did I understand why certain vocalists tend to "eat the mic", or be so close.  When playing with multiple instruments with a stage full of sound, feedback easily finds its way into the mix.  Keeping the mic levels at such a point (no so hot) to mitigate sound from entering the vocal mic helps in the feedback battle.  Dave's active use of a feedback buster covering the soundhole on most his rigs suggests he is very much aware of the feedback threat and being a soft-spoken vocalists, eating the mic allows him to get "his" desired sound and nothing more.

Now if you're referring to his "angry monster, mouth-wide-open" rage filled look, well, he puts emotion into his work...and does it well.   :)

That's the identical twin to my 2000 914c, complete with the hint of runout on the Englemann top. (Except now mine has a great custom truss rod cover from Captain Bill Nichols.)  Believe it or not, when I bought it, I didn't know Dave Matthews played one. The first time I played it out, people kept asking me if I would play some of his music. Only later did I find out why!

To me, this particular model remains the most elegantly appointed Taylor ever made - just the right balance of being well dressed without crossing over into "gawdy." The Cindy inlay says Taylor elegance to me. I was glad to see Taylor bring back this look several year later, though I doubt my being so vocal about it had anything to do with that.

Pretty cool article about Dave and his main axe.  Although the title misleading, most talk is about other stuff.

Something to note, his tech changes strings roughly every seven songs.  Wow!

every seven songs :o

i know that Dave's concerts are known to be quite 'extended' in some instances, so i'm hoping his
tech has something like cjd-player's 'hot-rodded' B & D cordless driver, or perhaps a B & D PD600 -
one of those little plastic crank string winders isn't going to 'git-r-done', or at least not in this case ;)

I hear ya.  Busy job.  Fortunately, Dave tends to switch out guitars quite a lot during a set.
