Taylor 214ce-K Question
« on: November 02, 2021, 08:14:13 PM »
Around the middle of the year last year I bought a new Taylor 214ce-K.  I was looking for a 214 and I understood that the entire guitar was laminate.  Laminate was not a problem for me because I live in a low humidity area all year long.  So today I was looking at the same guitars and I see they added $100 to the price but I am also seeing Solid spruce top.  So now I am curious as to if mine from 2020 has a solid spruce top also or has a laminate top.  Either way is fine but now I am curious??  Thanks.

Yours would have a solid spruce top.

What Susie said, the 214-k should have been solid top with laminate back and sides.

Every guitar, from the humble Baby Taylor all the way up the food chain, has a solid top.  Taylor has never made a laminate top in any of their product lines, and this from day one, AFAIK.

Thanks for that Edward. I thought that was the case (99% sure), but I didn't want to go that far with my response to the OP. I didn't want to stick my neck out, so to speak.  ;)

The Taylor 214 line is a tremendous value, and, although I have never owned the koa model, I think that makes it that much sweeter.

The 214ce was the first guitar I bought, and it led me on a years-long journey that I often attribute to how good that first guitar was for me.

Enjoy that SOLID top!

No, not wrong at all.  That is a great attitude to have!  As has been said above, Taylor has never made a production guitar with a laminated top.  But many of the lower numbered models (under the 300 series) have laminated back & sides.  They have also never made a dovetail neck joint either, as Bob Taylor got his start in repairs converting dovetails into bolt-ons.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

It's all Koa including the top.

The OP's is a 214, not a 224. So it has a solid spruce top, not a solid Koa top.
