What song are you learning/working on?
« on: February 09, 2012, 05:07:15 PM »
I have been working on "Manha de Carnaval" strumming and now I'm adding some fills and it's beginning to take shape - when I'm ready to rip up the sheet music in frustration I launch into Zac Brown "Knee Deep" and Jesse J's "Price Tag" (just learned these last week).

Been working mainly on finger picking songs.  Blackbird by the Beatles, Puff the magic dragon by Peter, Paul and Mary and Dust in the Wind by Kansas.  I about got Puff and getting close to Backbird but Dust in the Wind will probably take a while longer...

Ryan Adams "Ashes and Fire".  Strumming wise, it's not too difficult, but he does so many hammer-ons and roll-offs, that it makes it one of the more complicated tunes I've worked on in a while.

Skating away (on the Thin Ice of a New Day), Man of Constant Sorrow.  I could only dream of playing Smoke on the Water at this juncture

Stuff in open G:  Abide With Me (learning this hymn for my father's memorial service); Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground (can't remember, but I think the original Blind Willie Johnson song is in open D...close enough).

Stuff in standard tuning:  Willow Weep For Me (can't believe I've never played this one before after years of playing jazz); some John Dowland lute piece (can't remember the name).  Lute music on a Taylor GC4 is kind of weird and fun to try.

30 years later and my spin on Rush's 2112 (the entire album) is almost complete. Only thing left to do is play the leads like Alex does. No problem.  ;)

A chord melody arrangement of "Moonlight In Vermont", using a pick, which is kind of a jazz and pop classic, and a beautiful ballad. Two days ago I got through the whole arrangement at a "stately" tempo without looking at the chart or stumbling.  Now it's time to make it more musical, and put some transition runs in it here and there. Also I need to improvise an intro.  Because it's kind of a quiet song with some wonderful chord voicings, it is sounding really nice on my cedar top 812ce, through an amp.

Next up will probably be "Here's That Rainy Day".

My overall musical goal is to start building a repertoire of tunes in chord melody style. If I get to the end of the year and have maybe three that are truly memorized, are musical, and under my fingers,  I'll be real happy. I'll never be a master at it but I hope I can be a "journeyman".  Chord melody playing is very, very  challenging as many of you know if you've tried it. But, name almost any of the great jazz guitarists past or present, and they mastered it.

Love the chops!!!!

So, I'm working on a couple of different versions, one in E (original key) and one in kind of a modified drop D with capo at 2 (whatever key that is).  Both sound pretty good.

Here's one I really liked as well......

I'm re-learning Cavatina (from The Deer Hunter) by Stanley Meyers. It was at one point part of my nylon string repertoire...seems like it should adjust to steel strings OK.
