GA3-12
« on: February 05, 2012, 08:36:33 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has a Taylor 12 string. I'm considering getting one for solo gigs.Curious as to how the neck angle holds up.
Thanks,
Steve

I have a 2007 GA8-12. Its neck angle has held up just fine.

We have one that would roughly be a GS5 with a hog top.  Its 3 years old now and is great.  No problems.

Is there some reason to be concerned with the GA and neck angle on a 12 string?  My 555 is 19 yrs old (1993), no problems, amazing sound, old style neck too.  I can't imagine things would be more tentative with the newer NT neck.

i have a 84 650 that is doing fine neck angle-wise & pretty much everything else -
the saddle was probably replaced at some point & it seems to have an exaggerated
forward lean, but it has plenty of height, strong break angle & the action is good :)

i had a 02 454ceLTD imbuia that was about 4 years old when i acquired it &
over the next few years, i had no concerns with it ... no worries here, imho :D
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Im not sure, but it seems to me, that the angle on the new ones are different. I have a "99 414 that Taylor reset last year and it completely different than the newer ones. The last 4 or 5 frets on all but my 2011 412 seem to rise slightly instead of fall off as they near the end of the neck. The '99 looks the way I like, and plays as well & sounds better than any except the GS6(tone factory).
I just bought a 2004 710-L9 Brazillian ,should have it by week-end.Ican't wait

Hey Steve,

Like the other poster, I can't see why a GA 12-er would have any difficulties or potential issues as compared to any of the other Taylor 12s.  Pre-NT neck, they've stood up well; with NT you're golden!

FWIW, I've owned a 655 that I very much dug, and sold it only for my RT12, and in the interim had played a 3 and 8 series 12string.  Every Taylor 12er (yes, from the 3 to the 6 to the 8 to my RT) has played superbly; better than any other 12-er I've ever played.  Maybe it bears mentioning that I've loved/wanted a 12 string for decades, but never could bond with playing even the nice Guilds et. al. ; others sounded good, but never played good "enough" for me to want to take them home.  Taylor's 12 changed that for me.  And FWIW, years ago Leo Kottke returned to using a 12 because of Taylor's now-commonly-known slick action.  All this to say, if you like the tone there's no reason to think that something will go awry with your Taylor 12, regardless of which series.  And IMHO, with the NT you have a built-in longevity that other 12-string guits would kill for.

I have an 03 455ce Ltd Rosewood Jumbo that plays and sounds as good or better than the day it left the factory.  Other than the ES being repaired under warranty, I've had no issues with it at all.

Yup, I tried a 354 & 355 recently, and between them they were the best 12ers I've tried so far.  Been looking for a couple of months or so, and have also tried Breedlove, Guild and Faith.  The Faith example I played was pretty good (a friend of mine ended up buying it!), and excellent value, but the two Taylors seemed several steps ahead on general feel and playability - for me at least, nut width and string spacing suited my fingers very well. They sounded good too!

Pretty much made up my mind on a Taylor 12er, but considering a short-scale option, as a closer match to my T5.  Still pondering...

Good luck - happy hunting!

Cheers

Dbf:  every four years, you have an attack of Guitar Acquistion Syndrome-Taylor variant.  So, it will hit you again in 2014, or two years from now.  Apparently in your case it goes dormant for awhile------you're lucky.

Can't answer the neck angle question, but my old 455 is near the top of my list of guitars that I wish I'd kept....
