Picked up a GS Mini hog!
« on: February 01, 2020, 09:58:31 AM »
Just picked up a great little mini mahogany. Beautiful darker wood, swapped out the plastic pins for ebony and dropped in a bone saddle. She sounds really good. I had a koa version for several years but could never get past its rather thin sound, so I sold it last fall. So far this hog version has a very satisfying sound. Just want to share with other Taylor affectionado’s! The photo is from reverb where I purchased it.

Some day in my future as well I'll be grabbing one as a travel guitar.  They are great guitars for the money.

Congrats on your new Mahogany GS Mini. Enjoy it. Can't get away from them.  :) I have had several versions (original, Blackwood, Rosewood and a Holden Village).  I still have the HV. Do you have any interest in a hard SBK case for yours. I have never used my case and am selling it. Keep the music playing!

I love my 2012 Mahogany GS Mini.  Due to arthritis I am not playing the Medium strings that the guitar came with, instead I am now playing with D'addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze Lights.  Just strumming with my fingers - flesh with some nail.  Really smooth.  I'm trying to get a Neil Young tone I'm chasing in my head.

Lots of Mini’s with lights on them, lose a little oomph if you will, but easier to play and still sound good. We have lights on ours now too.

never tried it with lights, mediums come on it to get enough volume out of the small body though.

Yes, the sound quality in terms of both volume and sweetness is really impressive with this little guy. I have been playing it a lot since I received it last Friday, and it sounds very close to its 314ce cousin. The 314 has a little deeper low end, a little more lush, but it is also 5 years older so the age probably contributes some of that (plus being all solid wood). But I have to say I’m really impressed. I know there is a lot of love for the koa versions, and I know they take longer to open up, but I had an absolutely gorgeous koa mini that even after 3 years of playing pretty steadily did not have the fullness of this mahogany version. Maybe it’s just my ears, don’t know. But I do know with searching you can find (and I did) a beautiful hog top that can give a koa top a run for its money in the looks department as well. Again, at least to my eyes. To each his own, I’m just happy to have a hog top back in the stable!

The only bummer to my mini purchase was that the original owner must of let their cat use the top of the case as a scratching post because it is all scratched and tufted up. I cleaned and cut the fabric remnants out as best I could (even used an old norelco electric razor) to shave the fabric tufts off, but it still looks like the cat got after it. Oh well, it could’ve been worse... ;D. I’ll have to keep a lookout for a used bag in good shape.
