Title: What's your UTGF name mean?
Post by: Epic Audio on May 22, 2017, 08:18:57 AM
Hello All,

Looking at some of the names used on the forum got me wondering what they mean and or where they come from. Some are pretty straight forward but others are not. This thread is an opportunity to learn what's behind some of the UTGF names and to post your info if you would like. So...

I have used my UTGF name for some time. Three of the letters in Epic are my initials (in order of my first, middle and last names), adding the forth letter made the word, which I think is cool. Audio is just what I do.

Mine is self-explanatory. Boring, huh?!  ::)
But, since I only have Taylor's now in my life, it only makes sense.

When I used to play professionally back in N.Y., many audiences seemed enthralled with my energetic strumming style. Someone once called me a "strumming fool", and the name stuck...that's it!

I was joining a well known online auction site and needed to create a username; one of their suggestions for creating a username, was to use the name of the place you lived and a favourite animal. At the time I was working in the Shetland Islands, at a base called Royal Air Force Saxa Vord, and I like cats; so the name Saxacat was born.

Very boring really  ::)

Mine is pretty straightforward, I like to play guitar and I fly for a living, so it combined two passions. Used to always bring a Taylor on the road but now I use carbon fiber for that for its durability. Still love to come home to my Taylor's though.

Dave:  I don't know whether it occurred to you, but your handle could also be interpreted as being a 'worried' flyer... ;)

I guess now that I've chimed in I'll have to own up to having one of the most boring forum names out there:  purely a concatenation of the first syllables of my first and last names, plus part of a number that's relevant to me.

16 years ago my wife and I moved from the Chicago suburbs to rural northwestern Illinois.  She has always loved horses and grew up with them by working at a dude ranch in junior high, high school and college. She converted me into a cowboy and we now have 4 horses and 2 mini donkeys in our backyard.
I cannot claim to be a real cowboy, but I more than play one on TV as evidenced by many pairs of cowboy boots that may or may not have horse poop on them. Several years after moving, I picked up my old Yamaha guitar after 20 plus years of not playing. So my name represents two of my favorite hobbies.

When America-on-line, known lto many as AOL, started back in the 1980's they asked for a "screen name" when you joined. Prodigy back then, another online provider, assigned some whacky number for you to log on like R976249765@prodigy. A screen name was something new...

At the time, I was restoring vintage American motorcycles and my own ride was a 1947 Harley Davidson knucklehead. There were flatheads, knuckleheads, panheads, shovelheads etc. These were usually shortened to flatly, knuckle, pan, and shovel.

I could think of nothing else.  To this day... if you see knuckle47 ANYWHERE, it's me!

My nickname in college was Buck, short for Buckaroo.  I was a cowboy, and there weren't very many where i went to school.

Later, when email evolved, I needed an addy.   There were already a few hundred thousand "Buckaroos" in various forms where i did email.

I spelled it phonetically...I think I'm the only one.

For a few years now, I've been writing songs based on fantasy books/themes that also reflect Christian themes. It's admittedly a weird niche and when I was trying to think about how to describe it I figured the concept of Deeper Magic in the Chronicles of Narnia more or less covered it. So I think of "Deeper Magic Music" as sort of the theme/description of the songs I like to write.

My user name, King of Swirl, is from church. We have one main worship director and two other worship leaders, and the three of them rotate Sundays. Our director usually picks songs from groups like Hillsong, Bethel, etc. A lot of that music, if you're unfamiliar with it, features electric guitar parts with very wet, ambient sounds--lots of delay and spacey reverb. My pedalboard has Strymon Big Sky, Blue Sky, Timeline and Mobius in order to deliver those sounds. (On some days, if the keyboardist is out, I can fake the pads.) The Disaster Area controllers and loop switchers are great, btw.

She calls those sounds "swirly sounds." Eventually someone called me the King of Swirl.

So there you go.

Wickedwahine is my screen name.  Wahine means woman in Hawaiian, and I spend about 20% of the year there.  Nope, I am not wealthy at all, but my mom has five timeshares on Kauai and a few weeks a year on Oahu as well.  Since I am an only child that works from home, and she is single, she takes me with her each time she goes.

As a result of having spent most of my life going there so much, I love all things Hawaiian, playing ukulele, doing hula, their food, etc.

The wicked is because I used to play rec league softball for a team called the Wicked Women.  :)

Since I was 7 I knew what I wanted to do for a living and that is to be a Cabinetmaker.
Beautiful wood gets me going and I love to make things so, I'm my happiest when I'm out in our fully equipped home cabinet shop.
It has rubbed off on my wife too so we're having a great time during our retirement.

I made this dresser for my wife recently. It's made of Canary wood, Figured Walnut and Figured Pacific Coast Maple.
The 3 drawer boxes are made of Sapele with some left over 1/4 Teak plywood for the bottoms.
I'll spend a lot of time at the lumber yard going through almost every board ( you're allowed to pick) trying to find that just right board.
The last picture is my wife's Figured Pacific Coast Maple & Sapele sewing box that won first place at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.
I'm very proud of her.

I love how Taylor picked out the Ovangkol for my custom 12 fret, excellent job.
I found out it also goes by the name of Shedua and bought several beautiful boards for a future project.
This is why I go as Woodnut. :D Danny

My name is a reflection of my former life as an avid brass player (tromBONE, EUPHonium, bariTONE).  Almost took the plunge for a career as an orchestral trombonist but my senior year of high school, upon making all state (last chair), I realized how much of a gap there was between me and the top players.  Back in the 80s there were a dozen orchestras where you could earn a full time salary as a musician (close to half that now), and I didn't like my odds given how much better these other players were than me.  I decided on my fall back option, and took a career in science.  After I got a full time job, I resumed my brass playing with a vengeance.  Until my kid started taking lessons after my aunt gave him her old nylon string classical.  Being able to read music, etc. I watched his lessons carefully to help him, and I decided one afternoon to try it myself and I fell in love with it in no time.  Discovered Taylors when I took him to get his guitar restrung (pretty sure they still had gut strings on them - yech!) and went into the acoustic room and I just loved all of the big Taylors, Martins, and Gibsons.
