Title: Early aviator and aircraft indentification or....
Post by: madx2 on April 06, 2017, 07:45:45 PM
...Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.  I know this is a long shot but I am always fascinated by what other's know.

This photo was taken in St. Louis, 1910 at an Aero Meet.  Many famous American pilots were there along with some international ones.  The short man is French aviator, Alfred LeBlanc.  Anyone recognize the other man?

I am pretty sure this is a Bleriot but does anyone know the specific model?

No idea what this one is.  (Photo was taken by the passenger from a Wright Flyer)

Last one.

Any help with identification will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Don't know, but a couple of them look familiar. Read a book about a year ago titled "the Wright Brothers" by David McCullough, which had some pictures in it. The first and last pictures are the ones that look familiar; may have seen them in that book. I have also read a lot of material on early flight, especially leading up to and including WWI, so I may have seen them elsewhere. My favourite is a fiction titled "The Blue Max" by Jack D. Hunter. There was also a movie based on it. Movie was visually amazing, since it was 50 years ago and they didn't have CGI back then. In the movie they flew real aircraft which were accurate replicas. Book and movie do not share the same ending.

I think picture 2 is a Morane Saulnier parasol, possibly a prototype, based on the exposed frame of the  fuselage and what looks like a pole and suspending wires above the cockpit area, a staple of that aircraft. Could still well be a Bleriot, which is a similar design. Square frame around propeller area would indicate Bleriot, but believe that type had much wider wing and dual tail wings, one above and one below the tail frame. Of course many early designs were often changed almost overnight. (See Wright Bros book.) I think most of the evidence points to a Bleriot, but I'm still not sure. If it is, maybe a late model Bleriot XI?

An Airco DH.2 is an extreme example of exposed fuselage; it has no canvas covering the tail booms, probably forced due to it's 'pusher' design.

Thanks for your input donlyn.

An update....I have receive information from some people on a motorcycle forum in England saying that picture #2 is a Bleriot XI, #3 is an Antionette, #4 is a Walden 9.

I'm not saying they are right or wrong but I have no reason not to believe them.
