Title: Table Top Music Stand
Post by: woodnut on March 25, 2017, 11:20:53 PM
Since November I've been busy making new furniture for our home.
I started out with the dining table, (it has two 15" leaves) then the coffee table, 2 end tables, corner table & then a TV cabinet & a Cabinet to house my guitar amp from view.
The amp is in the cabinet in the rear with the Tiffany lamp, the door is open.
The furniture is made of Canary Wood, figured Western Maple, American Black Walnut & Jatoba.
Check out the Western Maple figure on the coffee table apron, we love it.
I didn't want any hardware spoiling the look of the wood, so the doors and drawers are push to open & close.
We purchased the 8 folding chairs at Costco, a convenient way to have a table for 8 without all those full sized chairs hanging around getting in the way.

It then occurred to me, to complete the set, I needed a table top music stand.
The music stand is made of Canary Wood and it folds flat by removing the 3/8" dowel, which is held in with compression springs.
It has a slot for a pencil right in front of where my book will sit.
I have Velcro to hold the two supports in place so they don't flop around while carrying it.
The finish is conversion varnish.

Very nice woodnut.  I enjoy cabinetry and woodworking in general, you seem to have it down pat.  it is beautiful.

Beautiful!! With your woodworking skills, have you ever considered building a guitar or other musical instrument?

Thanks for the kind and positive comments.
Working with wood has been my passion from an early age.
I spent all my working years as a cabinetmaker from kitchen cabinets to high end store fixtures for retailers like Nordstrom, Gucci, Ralph Lauren.
I still have a 1000 sqft. fully equipped cabinet shop & spend most days in the shop.
Now that my wife has retired I have an excellent apprentice in the shop making pretty boxes, etc.
As far as making a musical instrument, I'm confident I could meet the task with a lot of trial & error during the process , but why, when I can order a beautiful guitar from Taylor.

Very cool, "woodnut!"  There's just something about the beauty of wood -- especially when finely crafted -- that is timeless.  Well done!

Can't argue with that!  ;)

Thanks Tim & American Eagle.
Here's a side view of the music stand if someone wants to copy it.
Check out the Canary Wood grain in this corner table top.
I used the same ribbon Western Maple board for the 1/4" accent strip in all the tops.
I still have some for future projects.

Today I purchased 32.5 board feet of Canary Wood for a matching 6' buffet.
I made the old one in the early 1980's, out of stained Red Oak, it's time to replace it.

Thanks, never thought of making a guitar stand, now you've got me thinking 🤔.

A number of years ago, a friend built me a wonderful guitar stand. Great design, and he used East Indian Rosewood, trimmed in beautifully flamed Maple. It's gorgeous! It occupies a honored place in my studio, and only travels out with me for the most formal of occasions. It doesn't collapse or fold, which is fine by me. I have my Hercules stands for that. You might enjoy poking around a bit to see what others are offering (and charging). I'll be happy to give you a full 8% discount on my accustomed Idea Fee of 30%. 8)  Yeah, right!

Cotten, if you like, post a picture of your special guitar stand in this thread.
I'm not interested in building them for sale as handcrafted items don't sell well unless you practically give them away.
I'm busy making a buffet to match the other furniture I've made recently, don't know when I'll get around to designing and making a guitar stand.

Thanks Corgle.
Here's a picture of the buffet I just completed.
We love the quilted Maple drawer fronts and toe.

Thanks Steve, Yes I turned them.
I make custom turned back scratchers, shoe horns, bottle openers, vegetable peelers, ice cream scoops, and wine bottle tops.
Just finished a segmented Walnut urn for a friend who lost her dad.

The gate to our yard is made from Sapele.
I recently purchased several premium boards of shedua (some figured) which is known as Ovangkol with guitar builders.
Don't know what I'll build with it yet, but if my custom 12 fret Taylor is any indication, it will turn out very nice.
