Title: recommendation for 914ce cedar top sale
Post by: zeebow on June 04, 2014, 06:28:21 PM
the cedar topped 914ce has started frustrating me..

I'm thinking of selling and waiting to do a BTO, but I'm worried of the amount of spam I will get for such a pricey guitar.

my dealer won't let me trade up, which is also equally frustrating..

what have you guys done?

I want sinker/walnut...no bling this time. I guess we all move past that point eventually

post it here and on the AGF, i'd love to see it,

you might consider doing a consignment sale with Boutique Guitar Sales. Jesse is a really nice guy and does a good writeup/soundclip for the instrument, sales worldwide and moves quite a bit of Taylors. He has a waiting list for specific instruments-never know, someone might be out there looking for this.

good luck

I'm reluctant to sell online. don't want to get screwed, but I'll give it more thought...

wish a forum sponsor was I florida so I could just trade it

if you want to repost them in another thread, just right click, copy image url &
paste it between the img brackets (far left button in the second row above the smiley)

easy-peasy :)

it's so close to what I wanted. I thought this would be my last guitar but I've been wondering about sinker/walnut for a long long time now

I think go navy bought a cedar 812.

I was just curious what you guys did, especially the guys who move a lot of guitars to upgrade :)

you could try reverb

if you put it on craigslist, beware of spam from vintage city guitars ::)

Just curious about what is "frustrating" about your cedar-topped 914...it's a great wood combination on a guitar where no attention to detail and quality is spared. Bling can be overdone, but I think that the 900s stand out as tastefully appointed. Even though my newer guitars (BTOs) are more organic-looking, I still love the look of abalone on my old '95.

Just concerned that you might get rid of something you'll regret later. It probably has a place in your arsenal as long as you  have something different to compliment it.

lack of headroom. sorry..was typing on the phone :)

it sounds great with a more gentle attack, but on songs where I try to increase the volume to emphasize the part of the song, it almost sounds like it "clips"..if that makes sense.

where I'm my 414ce, I can strum even harder and the sound just gets louder the more aggressive I play.

that being said, the actual tone of my 914ce is preferable to me, as long as I don't drive it hard

put on elixir pb's, which helped..but still disappointed...being that this was supposed to be my holy grail of guitars.

I actually blame you, for making me want sinker! :)

the reason I would but the bling out of a sinker build is to let the wood stand out, I actually still like the abalone on my 914ce vs the appointments on the 800 series

Man o man o man!  You have no idea how much I'd love to help you with this "problem"!!!  My long-gone GA7e still makes me wince in sadness a bit, and whenever I see "cedar/rw Taylor" on boards I become Pavlov's puppy.  All that said, with stellar guits I am already enormously blessed with, there is no way I could possibly justify adding this gorgeous guit.

BTW, as far as "headroom," yes the overall volume of a cedar-topped guitar is lower than that of other species.  Now cedar/RW in a GA body is my absolute favorite for its tonal balance, warmth, and still plenty of sonic oomph for strumming; this I know first hand as mine had seen lots of live-band use.  But that's the difference: when plugged in, an acoustic's inherent "headroom" is irrelevant since the PA easily compensates.  But if one is looking for a cannon when unplugged, then yes, a different topwood is advisable.  Just sayin that so if anyone here interested in what IMHO is a stellar guit, one need not shy away fearing cedar is not enough :)

If headroom is a primary consideration, sinker may or may not give you what you need.  My sinker-topped GC Taylor (Martin size 000) is a mouse next to my Adi - topped Froggy Bottom (Martin size 00, one size smaller than the Taylor!)

zee, just wondering if you've tried medium lights PB strings (elixir 16077s or d'addario EXP19s) &
what gauge pick you're using - i use a dunlop gator 0.96mm (purple) or a tortex 0.88mm (green)

a cedar/rosewood X14 can be strummed more aggressively than some may give it credit for, imho
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xR7TB7QSmY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xR7TB7QSmY)

from what i've played, the volume level at a lower level of attack is higher, so it may not require
as much "throttle", but at the threshold of compression, the peak level may be a bit lower -
guitars that i've played that have compression grain on the top, like your 914ce, tended
to have a bit more depth, projection & headroom, but we each perceive tone differently

another idea, which may sound "counterproductive" might be to try a Tusq saddle & pins

the fully compensated saddle will require more sanding to fit as it's a 1/16" taller & longer (& unfortunately out-of-stock)
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/graph-tech-tusq-fully-compensated-saddle-1-8 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/graph-tech-tusq-fully-compensated-saddle-1-8)
than the OEM Taylor style

if you already have a saddle to swap in, & don't care for the white pins, they're available in black
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/graph-tech-tusq-ivory-acoustic-guitar-bridge-pins/365807000001286?source=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CNCW9bmf474CFeKXOgodWh4AnQ&kwid=productads-plaid^57302951347-sku^365807000001286@ADL4MF-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^30426177507 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/graph-tech-tusq-ivory-acoustic-guitar-bridge-pins/365807000001286?source=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CNCW9bmf474CFeKXOgodWh4AnQ&kwid=productads-plaid^57302951347-sku^365807000001286@ADL4MF-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^30426177507)

there is a considerable amount of difference between X12 & X14 body shapes, 12 & 14 fret
configurations, so there's probably very little chance that likeness in response will transfer over

Jersey makes a solid point: sinker is simply redwood, and redwood fits in between cedar and spruce  For headroom; sitka is a good start, with adi offering an even bigger footprint.  Then choose body shape and b/s woods to push/pull/shape the overall timbre.

Agree - my next BTO could well feature an Adi top since I don't have one in my collection as yet....

i have a non-sinker redwood top & i've played other models with a sinker top -
to my ear, whatever changes happened while the wood was submerged (mineral deposits, etc)
likely had some effect on the density & the response differed as it seemed a bit "darker"

this looks pretty interesting, provided one is looking for an adi top, 1 11/16" nut, 24 7/8" scale X14

Cedar and Redwoods (both Sinker and standard) are my very favorite top woods, for my lighter touch playing.

I agree with some of the other folks comments though, if headroom and volume is what you really need, Sinker is likely not what you really want, you want Sitka Spruce or ideally Adirondack Spruce.

sinker with adi bracing :)

I will admit that my sinker topped BTO with Adi bracing does have ample headroom for strumming, but it doesn't have that top shimmer that spruce typically provides. This guitar has a dark, whiskey voice, which I do appreciate as a stong contrast to most of my other GAs. In the end, the choice is yours. If I were you, I'd still try to hold on to that 914. I believe you would miss it after it's gone.

played a sinker top, adi braced rosewood back. sounds just like my 914ce, with just a tiny more headroom.

not much at all. it's very nice looking!
