Title: Aloha from Hawaii
Post by: The Doctor on December 18, 2013, 01:23:27 PM
Hey everyone... Been meaning to learn how to play for years just never got around to it. I've got a GS Mini 2011 and a 414CE sitting in my living room just begging to be played. I guess I'm going to try and learn with that Lean and Master guitar course. Then when I get good enough I may just go out to the beach and play while watching the sunset.

Anyone have tips for a new player that they are willing to share?

Oh and I may have a little GAS going on... I've seen pictures of the SB Koa and it looks beautiful but I can't find it anywhere since they stopped making them.

Welcome Doc, There's a whole bunch of Slack Key masters out your way. Good music camps going on too, several times a year. From my screen name, you can see what I play.

  What island?

Welcome to the forum Doc,  couple of nice guitars you have there.  I could not think of a better place to practice my guitar than in Hawaii on the beach, go for it.

Welcome.  And don't wait until you can play like Segovia to take your guitar to the beach!

Hi Doc. Welcome to the UTGF. Let us know how that guitar course works out. Hanging around here actually motivates me to play more. It's contagious. My advice: Pick 'em up and play 'em. Do it often. Enjoy. :)

I have been to Hawaii a few times, and was just wondering which island (county) are you from?

So when you were speaking of taking your guitar to the beach I assume you will be going to Waikiki,  or is that to crowded? and you have a lesser known beach to go to.

Tourists go to Waikiki, usually go up to one of the beaches at the north shore or in Kailua. Getting into Waikiki is a hassle and parking is terrible

welcome in Doc. you should probably change your name or your going to be doing a LOT of sore shoulder consultations !  ;D ;D ;D
another good place to start learning is Justinguitar.com. i found it a great resource for lessons and motivation. made it more fun to learn than the usual "dry" lessons i tried.
take it to the beach tomorrow ! that in iteslf will be a great motivator and who knows, maybe you'll find a friend to learn with.

$20 copays.  Hmmmmmmm...  Bet you wish HMO stood for Hawaiian Mouth Organ instead of a way to make a living.

Beautiful Doc. Enjoy your evening on the lanai. I used to live near there, in the high rise at Pearlridge Gardens and Tower. Our view was of the old Kam Drive In theater.

that is a beautiful mental image you left me Doc. i'm sitting in norther NY looking down at 3 inches of ice with snow slightly camoflaging it. i'd rather take my chances with sharks( and i understand that all of them don't reside in the water where you live) than go running in this stuff. when was the last time you had to spend 2 hours attacking your own car with a hammer just to get the door open?

So I was born and raised in NYC and did college in upstate NY and then med school in Erie, Pa... I know what you are experiencing and it sucks.

But here is a picture to make you a little jealous, it's a picture straight from my balcony taken about 5 minutes before I hit the post button... and yes if you look closely you can see the USS Arizona Memorial just behind the bridge 1/3 of the way from the right hand border of the picture.

beautiful pic Doc.. i am indeed jealous ! only been to Hawaii once. i was stuck on base for 2 weeks and not allowed to leave the flight deck(line.. codeblue). nor was i allowed to talk to any indigenous personnel. not the greatest of stays but someday i'll get back there.... and i know where to borrow a 414ce ! just a quick walk, a $20 copay and she's all mine for a few hours !!!  ;D
