Origin of the Taylor Peghead Inlay...from Bob Taylor's "Guitar Lessons" Book:
There was an old green thermometer hanging on the wall of the bathroom at the workshop that was made by a company that was also called Taylor. The three (Taylor) owners thought the thermometer logo had a nice typeface, so they used that as the inspiration for the Taylor peghead inlay.
One of the hobbies that I enjoy with my husband is making pure maple syrup here in Northern Michigan. The other day, we were bottling a batch of maple syrup and I smile each time we do so. We use a Taylor thermometer in the bottler. It's so cool to compare the logo on the Taylor thermometer to the inlay on my 414 peghead. They sure resemble each other!
Just a cool way my two hobbies, that are dear to me, intersect.
-
Cool... (couldn't resist the temperature pun).
It's great when happenstance makes enjoyable things coincide.
-
Yes they do!
I really need to read that book.
-
Thanks guys.......I thought it was something special to share, not to mention a bit of Taylor history.

I happen to own a thermometer just like that one. I thought it was made by Taylor Guitar... oops...
-
I don't get it...oh, just kiddin' around with you. Very cool interesting intersection!
-
We just got done with this year's syrup season. Just thought I repost this thread for the newer forum folks who didn't see it earlier. I still find it very interesting. But, maybe I'm just weird. :-\

they still use the same style logo on their thermometers

some of their other products have a more "modern" look

i hope that the headstock & logo font remains & is not "updated"

Susie. in a real Eureka moment it occurs to me that the truest intersection of your two hobbies would occur when you acquire a 600 series Taylor guitar!
-
Michael, our maple syrup thermometers (like the one in my original post) have the logo like Bob would have used to design the Taylor guitar peghead logo. Yes, hopefully he doesn't go modern.....I doubt it will change.
Jersey, you are so right. I will have to tell my husband I NEED a 600 series MAPLE guitar! ;D....an observation that I had never thought of. I did get a new dulcimer about a year ago and the builder did a maple leaf on the headstock. So, that was pretty cool. But, I'm still liking the maple Taylor idea! Maybe a HV GS Mini would be an option, but my husband likes the hog....so I'm considering that.
My "toys" are instruments (including Taylor guitars), my husbands "toys" are maple syrup equipment.

who Knew!?!? :)

I missed this post the first time around. Very cool. 8)

Sorry if this is a bit of a hijack, but here's how two of my hobbies (one cars, the other Taylor guitars) intersected: A C5 and a T5, both Aztec Gold.

Yes, I think it is cool too. The fonts are so close.
-
I am thinking you NEED a 614...maybe in tobacco sunburst. Kinda close to the color of syrup??? We are going to drive you nuts with this Ha Ha!!!! 8)

Jersey Tuning also pointed out that I "need" a 600 series (aka maple) guitar. I agree with you both......but not sure if my husband does. Then again, if he's buying more maple syrup equipment, I could justify it as needed equipment. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Hmmm...I have a 2003 50th anniversary red C5 in the garage and the only guitar that I really want and don't yet have would be a new T5 and the color of T5 that most appeals to me is the Borrego Red. You could be on to something!

Cars & guitars -- they go together like peanut butter & jelly! Or in this case, maple syrup and, well, apparently anything... ;)

hmm.... a 616ce with a syrup dispenser..... you might go thru a lot of strings..
my honeyburst one could easily be considered "mapleburst- Grade A amber"

yum....me likes :P

an amberburst top, back & neck
(flamed hard rock maple) with edgeburst sides would be sweet (literally) :)
with AA flamed maple, a crystalline effect might be a possibility
(a bit lighter & more translucent than the "burnished" brush fire finish)
it would be a bit different than a honey

or desert sunburst

so, i'm guessing it would fall into the "custom finish" category ($$$)
