What do you sit on when you play?
« on: June 14, 2015, 11:08:11 AM »
I love playing guitar, like I am sure most of you do, but by back gets to aching after a while of playing. I bought a "guitar stool" last summer but I have found that the rail that I put my foot on is to high and makes my hip joint ache after a short time. Our dinning room chairs are fairly comfortable but with out padding on them my rear starts to hurt... arrg! :-\

Maybe I am just getting old and need to not play for to long? LOL

Just curious as to what you sit on when your are strumming along at home?

I have sacroiliac joint/lower back pain, and believe it is better to keep both feet flat to the floor where possible, i.e. both hip joints in their natural position rather than one twisted - to achieve this I use a Dynarette cushion to support the guitar at a higher height - you can then sit on any bog standard chair and don't need a foot stool/rest- thoroughly recommended by me :)

kitchen chair.  mostly i play at home.  chair is armless, cushioned, and most importantly at the right height to allow my feet to be flat on the floor with great posture.  i have sciatica, and learned that seating posture is everything.  chair is part of a set i inherited from my grand aunt which includes a chrome/formica table which might be best described as early lucille ball.

i also favor large acoustic guitars which helps force me to keep my back straight and not hunched over while playing.  guitar rests on my right thigh.  went into this a bit in a thread on the 818e grand orchestra a while back.  title of that thread was 'go models' and is currently near top of page 4 of this sub-forum.  page 3 of that topic.

Picked up this beauty as a birthday present. Very comfortable seating and the leg length is tailored to you. They ask for your measurements when you order.

Whatever is available.  Folding chairs, restaurant chairs, whatever is there.  My preference is for a chair with no arms, but if that's the only thing available, and we will be sitting, then I adjust.

Around home, I'm usually lounging on the couch when playing.

It's called the Sonus musicians chair.  Wade Boggs in North Carolina makes them.  Wonderful folks to work with.

I stand when I play. Singing works better when I'm standing. Also, posture and back pain seem to be less of an issue.

At home I use either an office chair with no arms or a stool.

My wife gave me an Ultimate Guitar Chair for my birthday.  I really like it, no back discomfort.  I was using a Dynarette also to keep the neck of the guitar up while seated but recently found the Neck Up and I like it a lot better than the Dynarette. i had also tried a foot stool but both Dynarette and Neck Up were better for me. Good luck.

Piano bench.

No arms, and hides all my guitar stuff inside.

Tough on the rear end after a few hours though.

Maybe I can find a nice cushion for it someday.
