What exactly are you sitting on?
« on: November 29, 2014, 09:19:42 PM »
Hi all,

I'm about to set up a music room, and I'd love some recommendations for a guitar chair.  I'm looking for something that's going to put me in the proper position (unlike my couch, on which I tend to slouch), is comfortable, and is unlikely to ding up my guitar.  What do you think?

I use this ProLine stool; it's pretty good and reasonably comfortable.  I do not recommend this stool; my brother has one and, quite frankly, I've sat on more comfortable park benches...

I have a stool I bought at Guitar Center. It's comfortable, rotates, and there is nothing to ding your guitar on. It's also very light and easy to move around as needed.

I have 2 Pick'n Gliders. Very comfortable, and you find yourself moving to the beat. I love them.

Has anyone tried Taylor's official bar stool?

I'm pretty sure this is the model of stool that Joe at Empire Music keeps in his climate-controlled area where all the Taylors are; at least it's the same in my mind.  I've sat on it while browsing at Empire, and it's at least as comfortable (to me) as the ProLine stool I have.  It is a bit taller than the ProLine stool, so people with short legs may not prefer it, though.

I'll have to check those out, if I can find one to actually sit in.

We got our 2 through Elderly Instruments about 13 years ago. They still look like new. Some people have poo poo'ed these on another forum, because they claim you can get a run-of-the-mill glider for quite a bit less. Well, I think you get what you pay for. These are very comfortable and really hold up. The sitting position and seat height is perfect for me. As much time as I spend playing, I wanted something comfortable. We looked at it as buying a piece of furniture, buy what feels good and serves the purpose. I got to try them before I bought them, because this is one of the chairs that Elderly's has in their high-end guitar room.

Does anyone make bar stools with backs on them? I need a little back support.

When playing out, I generally stand.  When practicing at home, I sit.  The most comfortable guitar chair I've come up with is an office chair with the right arm removed.  It is fully adjustable for height and lumbar support.  Swivels and rolls.  Doesn't make noise when you move on it.

I played in a duo with a piano player for several years, and sat during that gig (on various stools - never found one that was comfortable for an entire evening).  I find I am more "on" when I'm standing... so, if I can sing and play it while sitting, it will be even better when I stand.

I have the Taylor stool and it's perfect. Swivels, but not height adjustable, footbar just right and is easily stable enough to "perch" on the edge with one foot on the floor and one on the rest. Really good quality. I looked at alternatives for ages before realising that the one in my FLGS was just right and that someone has actually put some thought into it. Highly recommended.

I use a K&M stool. It's perfect, solid and foldable. A back rest is an option: http://produkte.k-m.de/en/product?info=265&xbe3e4=15c14f43deb7895dafcf9d9f219c9b2f

Setting up a music room can be a lot of fun! I set mine up with several options. I do have a Pick N Glide chair, which I love to sit in while playing and it is really cool as you can glide to the music like Taylor Girl said. Love that! I also have a few 24" stools that I use. These I use for guests and particularly while recording. These are easy to position when setting up microphones/stools etc. They are quiet too where the glider can make noise that gets captured with your performance. As far as position goes, I always use a strap regardless of what chair/stool I am sitting on. The strap insures consistent playing posture/position.
Have fun with it and enjoy your music room!

I have both a Pick-n-Glider bought from Elderly and one of these Roc-n-Soc tower stools.   http://rocnsoc.com/new/product-line/tower-seats  They both work well, and I remember that for most Roc-n-Soc seats you can also get backrests, foot rings and other accessories.  It all depends on whether you want a normal but fairly upright seated position (Pick-n-Glider) or a more upright bar stool position.

One note:  I ordered the Pick-n-Glider with black leather upholstery (at an upcharge) to match other furnishings in the room.  While their fabrics are breathable, leather is not.  When I sit down on the seat, it "deflates" as all the air rushes out via the zipper on the back of the cushion.  I found it easiest to simply leave the zipper undone to let the compressed air escape more easily.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Yep, nothing like moving a thread to the Siberia of forums to successfully suppress participation.  But I want to thank all the people who took the time to make thoughtful suggestions regarding guitar chairs.  It was all very useful to me.

How about a Cajon? Then you can keep time by drumming with your foot at the same time.
