Visiting Indianapolis and New York, any advice?
« on: April 12, 2016, 03:49:07 AM »
So next month we're travelling from the UK to visit my wife's cousin who lives near Indianapolis before heading up to New York City for a few days.

Now we have different views on culture, she likes galleries and museums and I like all things music so where can you recommend we visit, music related, to even things up a bit?

Would a road trip to Chicago be viable? (we've hired a car for the duration in Indianapolis)

Oh yes, the Indy 500 is already sorted  :)

Thanks
Craig

NYC: catch a show at the Beacon Theater, my favorite NYC venue, or at any of the bazzillion concert places.  Rockwood Music Hall has something going on every night.  Venerable Jazz places: the Iridium, Blue Note, B.B. Kings, Birdland, etc etc.    Great guitar shops : Matt Umanov's in Greenwich Village -- Rudy's Music -- 2 locations.     The Lincoln Center venues for opera, symphony, and ballet.  And don't forget the Metropolitan Museum has a great collection of musical instruments

One thing Jersey left out would be the J. Peterman tour.  it is a must.  Ha

Thanks for that mgap, I had to google it but we'll put it on the to do list :-)

Jersey, the Beacon theatre looks cool but there's nothing on while we're there (3rd - 8th June)  but we're just too early for Jackson Browne which would have been very cool.

I watched a program about Mark Knopfler and his guitars and he went to a very old looking store in NYC, could that have been Rudys?

Maybe Rudy's, but also could have been Matt Umanov, which is in an old part of town and has been in business for over 50 years.

here's a link to some of what's going on from June 4-8

Thanks for the links Jersey, I have some pages set up on Songkick but your site looks more comprehensive.

There's not much response about Indianapolis though, maybe it's true what they say ;-)

I found the Mark Knopfler program
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27OT_FSWrIE
At 27 minutes in he goes to "the most beautiful guitar shop in the world" Rudy's and it's not far from our hotel!
